Jnana Paal, the Enlightening Milk of Cosmic Mother
Thiru Jnanasambhandar, a great master, child incarnation appeared as the son of God, living the path of “sat-putra-margam”. As an incarnation with a specific divine mission, He lived in body for only 16 years, and performed divine feats such as reviving the whole vedic tradition, traveling the length and breath of the Southern zone, and merging Himself back into ‘Shiva Jyoti’, light of Shiva, super consciousness by raising His frequency…
It all began with the most wonderful glorious event in His divine-filled life, the moment that is going to eternally remain soaked as the pinnacle of Divine Grace, and the intensity of Divine seeking
His blessed father Siva-Pada Hirudayar prayed for a son, for the most unusual reasons. On seeing the glorious tradition decline in the hands of egoistic Jain monks, on seeing the abandonment of the sacred body marks, the loving display of ‘Thiru Neeru’, the sacred ash, he established himself into meditation at the feet of Lord Shiva.
As the answer to the prayers, Thirugnanasambandar takes birth. Like any other child born as a result of intense tapas (penance), austere ‘thavam’, Gnanasambandar was fondled and loved with great delight in the family and the whole village.
The Trip to the Sacred Temple Tank
An innocent child of 3 playing his tantrums to take him along for the sacred bath, Siva-Pada takes His son to that hallowed water spot.
As the Vedic Sage dives into the water, the child standing on the bank of the full-to-brim tank, His state of mind not able to bear, the absence of the father for even a second, serving as an excuse began to weep, recollecting the anklet-girt feet of the Lord surging up in his mind.
With the lotuses–the eyes–brimming with tears, he looked elsewhere and wept intensely, shaking and shivering with a noise resounding like the chant of the countless vedic shlokas (chants), while all created beings exulted in joy. He called, ‘O Mother! O Father!’ and wailed.
At the moment, the Lord seated on the sacred boat, desirous of bestowing grace on him with His one look, mounted on His bull along with the willowy dame of the hills, and arrived with the resplendent baby moon crest on His head at the luscious bank. The Lord and the dame are none other than Devi Meenakshi, and Lord Sundareswarar.
With a gracious compassion arising in His heart at the sight of the wailing child, Lord Shiva looking at Devi, whom all the worlds worship and said: “Give him in a golden cup a feed of the milk which gushes forth from your twin breasts.”
Lord Shiva thus gracefully bidding her, the awe-inspiring lovely mother, the first cause of everything, the embodiment of prosperity-mercy, went near the child and drew into a cup, the milk of Her breasts.” Mother blended into the milk, the sweet ambrosia, the inconceivable knowledge of Shiva, fed the child the milk, while wiping his tears.
Because the Lord, who is the Father and Mother to everything, everyone in the Cosmos, bestowed His Enlightenment on the child, he became, ‘aaludaiya pillaiyaar’ – the child over whom the Lord has established His Lordship– and became ‘Shiva Jnana Sambandar – ‘one who has gained the contact, the experience of Shiva’.
The Enlightening Milk
The real Truth of his whole happening is explained by 293rd Guru Maha Sannidhanam Srila Sri Paramahamsa Nithyananda, as it is…
Thiru Jnanasambandar’s greatness has to be understood. His bio-memory itself was never disconnected from the cosmic consciousness; that is why, within three years, he just remembered his original state and the cosmic mother; Nature; Prakrithi offered her own essence, which is enlightenment into Gnanasambandar.
That is what we visually portray; Devi appeared and offered her own breast milk, it is a visual presentation of the ultimate truth; the cosmic mother prakrithi, nature, opened up herself, poured her essence into Thiru Jnanasambandar.
3 years is the time usually a child feels the individual identity; ‘pratyaghatma chaitanya jagrutha’. Brain becomes capable of experiencing individual identity.
At the age of 3, when Jnanasambandar has started feeling that individual identity may start happening in him, he felt deeply disturbed, He wants to remain in cosmic consciousness. So he strongly cried, expressed his deep suffocation, uncomfortable, disturbed feeling towards the cosmos. His body was established, his bio-memory was established in enlightenment, that is why, the moment he expressed his suffocation, cosmos had to respond; cosmos had to appear; cosmos had to express itself.
Immediately the cosmos expressed itself to bless Thiru Jnanasambandar; to make Him experience the ultimate. The Cosmic mother, prakrithi, Devi appears and pours her own essence into him, which is enlightenment.
That is the story of ‘Enlightenment milk’; ‘Jnana paal’. When cosmos poured her essence into Thiru Jnanasambandar, he became enlightened and in the gratitude and ecstasy, Samadhi, the extraordinary sacred sentiments started expressing from him.
The Vision of the Divine and the Enlightening Milk
When Jnanasambandar was three years old, his parents took him to Lord Shiva’s temple at Sirkazhi. At the holy temple tank, Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati Devi – Sundareshwara and Meenakshi gave their darshan (divine vision) to Him. The Cosmic Mother Devi fed him with her enlightening milk. His father saw drops of milk on the child’s mouth and asked who had fed him, whereupon the boy pointed to the sky and responded with the song ‘Todudaya Seviyan’, emitting the very the first verses of the “Tevaram“.
Each Enlightened Master or Incarnation radiates the energy of enlightenment in their own unique expressions. Thiru Jnanasambandar, being a great Master, his bio-memory itself was never disconnected from the Cosmic Consciousness. That is why within 3 years he remembered his original state.
3 years is usually the time when the child feels the ‘pratyakatma jagrata’ (experience of individual consciousness) happening. The brain becomes capable of experiencing the individual identity. Jnanasambandar’s body was established in enlightenment. When he started feeling that the individual identity may start happening in him, he felt deeply disturbed. He wanted to remain in cosmic consciousness. He strongly cried out and expressed his suffocation, uncomfortable feeling towards the cosmos. The moment he expressed his suffocation, the cosmos has to respond, the cosmos has to appear, the cosmos expresses itself. That is why the Cosmic Mother, Prakriti, nature opened up herself to Thiru Jnanasambandar and poured her essence into him. Giving breast milk is visual presentation of this ultimate truth.
That is the story of the famous ‘enlightenment milk’ called as Jnanapaal. When cosmos poured her essence into Thiru Gnanasambandar, he became enlightened. Overflowing with gratitude in deep samadhi, extraordinary sacred sentiments started expressing itself.
There is no philosophy in Jnanansambandar’s expression. Devotion and Gratitude is the center philosophy of Madurai Aadheenam.
Yatra to Pandya Kingdom and Revival of the Madurai Adheenam
During the reign of the Pandyas, the Samanam tradition was overpowering the Saiva tradition. Even the Pandya King was a follower of the Samanam tradition. However, his wives Mangaiyarkkarasi and Kulasiraiyar followed the Saiva tradition. Both the wives were worried about the condition of the Pandya kingdom.
At the time, some devotees from the Chola kingdom came to Madurai and met Mangaiyarkkarasi, conveying all the glories of Gnanasambandar. This made her very joyous and she sent a request through Kulasiraiyar to Gnanasambandar, who was in Thirumaraikattu at that time. He accepted, even though Appar did not think it was a good idea to do so, due to the unusual timing of the invitation. Jnanasambandar’s reason for this was that he wanted to spread the glory of the Vedic tradition, the pride and importance of Thiruneer and to impart culture and devotion in them. Mangaiyarkkarasi and Kulasiraiyar received him with the customary rituals and paid their respects. Gnanasambandar was overwhelmed by their devotion and sang ‘Mangaiyar karasi Valavarkan Parai’ in her praise. Later, Mangaiyarkkarasi, Kulasiraiyar and Sivanadiyarkal (devotees of Shiva) had darshan (divine vision) of the Meenakshi-Sundareshwara temple at Madurai. Gnanasambandar stayed at the Thirumadalayam in Therkkavani Moolastreet.
The Three Tests by Samanargals
At Madurai, on seeing the number of people visiting Thirumadalayam to meet Gnanasambandar, the Samanargal (Jain mars) became jealous and brought this to the notice of the king, who immediately issued orders to put a stop to this. That night, the Samanargal lit fire to Thirumadalayam. However, nobody inside was affected by the fire. On finding out that this fire was instigated on the king’s orders, Gnanasambandar was upset and cursed the king. With the power of his enlightenment, he changed that same fire into a fever called ‘Veppu’, with which the king was now suffering.
The Samanargal tried everything they could to save the king, but failed. Instead, the fever kept increasing. Koon Pandyan was in deep regret for his actions.
Mangaiyarkkarasi and Kulasiraiyar went to the king and told him that the reason for this fever was because of what he did to Thiru Gnanasambandar. They requested him to come to the palace and heal the king. Just hearing that Sambandar was coming to the palace caused the king’s fever to decrease. It decreased further on having his darshan.
After this, Sambandar sat on a throne near the king’s head. By now, the Samanargal had surrounded him and Mangaiyarkkarasi worried that they intended to harm Sambandar. By the power of his intuition, he understood her feelings and said, “The Eternal Blessings of Lord Siva are with us, so nothing can happen to us. Do not fear.” This consoled her.
To prove their power, the Samanargal decided to cure the king’s left side and have Sambandar cure his right side. As they began, the fever on the right side dropped drastically, while the left side was still the same. He sang ‘Mandira Mava Neeru’ to cure him. The Smamnargal were ashamed of their loss.
At this stage, Koon Pandyan requested Sambandar to heal him, as he could not bear his fever anymore. Sambandar sang once more, and the king was fully cured.
The Samanargal wanted to have another test. They wrote all their mantras on Oolai (palm leaves) and put them into the fire. As expected, they were all consumed by the fire. When Gnanasambandar wrote ‘Thalirila Valaroli’ on the Oolai and put them into the fire, the leaves remained green. Even now, it is called ‘Pacchai Pathigam’.
Despite losing their pride a second time, the Samanargal wanted a third test. They wanted ‘Punal Vathan’ or debate. Kulasiraiyar did not intend to oblige, as she felt that the truth had already been proven twice and a third time was unnecessary. To convince everyone, the Jain mars declared that if they lost a third time, the king could punish them in any way he wanted. So, Jnanasambandar accepted. Everyone went to the shore of the Vaigai river and the Samanargal wrote their mantras on Oolai once more, and put them in the river. The leaves floated away due to the current of the river. Sambandar did the same, but his leaves went against the current.
This proved the truth ‘Saiva Samayame Samayam’. These leaves were brought to Jnanasambandar later and Puja was done to it. Even today, ‘Yettu pooja’ is done at the Adheenam every day.
Due to the deep guilt and shyness of losing, all the 8000 Samanargal did not want to live anymore and they committed suicide. Jnanasambandar neither killed nor ordered the king to kill them. But, whoever wanted to live, all of them were blessed and initiated by Thiru Jnanasambhandar and accepted into the fold of Thiru Jnanasambhandar. Those few Jain Munis who had become very egoistic and arrogant, without having any experience, just with the words they had started thinking that they know everything, and even at that time, Jnanasambhandar was the young one, and all these guys were established, old and many.
The Extraordinary Powers of Thiru Jnanasambandar
Thiru Jnanasambandar expressed the highest extraordinary powers through the beautiful poetical hymns immersed in the sacred sentiments of his devotion for Lord Shiva. Later, some of his devotees from Sirkali requested him to come to Sirkali. He obliged, and on the way, some Buddhists were blocking the way of the Adiyargal who was traveling with Jnanasambandar. He sang ‘Panchakkra tenth thirupathigam thirupadal’ and lighting struck the Buddhist’s head and he died.
After reaching Sirkazhi, he stayed with his parents for a few days. Then, he moved on to Thondai Nadu. At Thiruvothuril, the palm trees never bore any fruits. The people in the village were very worried about this. Gnanasambandhar sang ‘Poondher Thayana’ and turned all the male trees into female trees, which would bear fruits.
He crossed forests, rivers, mountains and reached Kalathi. As he was traveling through the mountains, in his Sivagai (english meaning), he asked his Munnivar where the Kalathi mountain was. At the very sight of the mountain, he was dissolved in love as he remembered Kannappa, a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He sang ‘Vanavargal’ and worshipped ‘Kalathi Nathar’.
Thiru Jnanasambandar, The Re-establisher of Madurai Aadheenam
The Reviver of the Madurai Aadheenam, Thiru Jnanasambandar was born in Sirkazhi, Tanjore district of Tamil Nadu, South India in 7th century A.D. He was born to the blessed parents – Sivappada Irudhayar and Bhagawathy Amma as the fruit of their deep devotion, intense prayers. He appeared as the son of God, living the path of “sat-putra-margam”. He has been accepted, revered, and loved as the direct incarnation of Lord Shiva. This is beautifully proven by accepting one of Thiru Jnana Sambandar’s divine acts as part of the sacred Thiruvilayadal Puranam, 64 leelas of Lord Sundareshwara by Paranjyoti Munivar. The purpose of His divine incarnation was to revive, re-establish the pure enlightened science of vedic tradition, “Veda Neri”, which He declared as the only philosophy of Madurai Aadheenam. The quintessence of the Vedic tradition is to express and radiate “devotion and gratitude” for Lord Shiva. He appeared to place an end to the unconscious irreligious negative movements that were impurifying the original spiritual purity of mother of all religions, Veda Neri.
As an embodiment of supreme love, He radiated a state of intense ecstatic love of God i.e mahabhava – the “Feeling Connection”, the philosophy of Madurai Aadheenam. He taught and transmitted to the world the sacred 5 syllables “Namah Sivaya” – ‘Na-Ma-Chi-Va-Ya”, and glory of the sacred holy ash, “Thiru Neeru”, and the greatness of the Tamil language. His appearance was also to protect His surrendered devotees, and to not only awaken, but visibly show by His own living example, how to embody, and radiate the pure love of God.
Keeping Shiva’s feet firmly seated in His loving heart, He traveled far and wide expressing the devotional outpourings of sacred sentiments, singing the glories of the cosmic father and cosmic mother, the origin, causeless auspiciousness – Shiva, Mahadeva. His sacred outpourings of love for Mahadeva have been preserved and gifted to the world in the form of ‘Thevarams”. Just listening to them awakens the innate love every being has for Shiva, the super-consciousness.
Adi Shankara, the great incarnation of Shiva, praises Jnanasambandar as the king among all great poets in his Soundarya Lahari – “Kaveenam proudana majani kamaniya kavayitha” – the king among those great poets, whose works stole one’s mind.”
In only 16 years of his human life, He played the His divine acts, “leelas”. In His exalted state, wherever He went establishing the great vedic tradition, miraculous wonders happened. Just by His overflowing songs of love that poured out from the spiritual depths of His enlightenment, and the devotional peaks of evolved emotions, he overpowered the matter to express as energy, and spontaneously played them as an innocent child. The dead came back to life; the diseased were healed with just a touch, a look; the poor showered with wealth, the child-less conceived divine children; and wonder of all wonders, they were all showered with the ultimate blessing – the compassionate grace of “Sivaperuman”, Lord Shiva. At the behest and prayers of the Pandiyan Queen Mangaiyarkarasi, when Thiru Jnanasambandar came to Madurai from Sirkazhi, Chola state, he stayed at Madurai Aadheenam, the vedic institution and revived it back to all its original glory. From this time, ‘Veda Neri’, the vedic tradition has witnessed a new chapter, a “golden era” of Madurai Aadheenam.
Assuming the human body for only 16 years, His mission was to rid the holy land of Shiva from the persecuting, irreligious Jain tradition that had lost all its sublime spirit because of the inevitable corruption that follows after the Living Enlightened Masters leave their body. A golden era of not only restoring, reestablishing, but enlivening, growing, spreading the richest living tradition, the Vedic Tradition, the real wealth of the planet.
Revival of the ‘Golden Era’ of the Veda Neri, Vedic tradition
His overflowing devotion and energy expressed itself in all dimensions, healing people, showering them with boons, and reviving the glorious vedic tradition. Glimpses of some of his divine plays, leelas give us insights into his causeless compassion towards raising the humanity.
Cotton bags may be millions or billions, but one matchstick is enough. One being with conscious experience is enough. Thiru Jnanasambhandar is such a being, just with his conscious fire, he burnt all the unconsciousness, destroyed all the negativity, and with his strength he established the Vedic tradition again, revived the Vedic tradition again. As per the customs of those days, he went around from place to place and expressed the sacred sentiments, glory of the Cosmic father and the Cosmic mother, the origin, source, divine, causeless auspiciousness, Shiva, Mahadeva and energized, installed, did Prana Prathishta (process of giving life to deities) in so many of the temples and revived the Vedic tradition.
- Thiruneelakandayanappar was given the boon by Jnanasambandar to sing his songs with the musical instrument, Yaz.
- Thirunelvai Arathurai offered him pearl palakku, pearl umbrella and pearl emblems. He taught the people who were engaged with the Vedas, vedic tradition and the sacredness of ‘Om Namah Shivaya’.
- Thirunavakkarasar and Thirugnanasambandar worked together to spread the vedic tradition. Thirunavakkarasar was also called ‘Appar’ as this was the name Jnanasambandar called him by.
- Thiruppachilachiramam village was ruled by Kalli mazhavam. His daughter was affected by a disease called ‘Muyalagam’. By singing the song ‘Thunivalar Thungal’, he cured her disease.
- People living in Kodimada Sengundrur were affected by a sever fever. By singing ‘Avvinaikkivvinai’, he saved them all.
- At Thiruvaduthurai, he sang ‘Edarinum Thalarinum’ in praise of Lord Shiva, on request of his father, for which he got 1000 gold coins.
- At Thirumarugal, a merchant who was bitten by a snake was given rebirth by him, when he sang ‘Sadaiyayanumal’. Thereafter, he went on a pilgrimage to Thirusengkattangkudi, Thirupugalur and sang songs in praise of the Nayanmar Siru Thondar and Murugar.
Later, he went to Thiruvavur along with Appar Swamigal to participate in the Thyagaraja Peruman Thiruvathirai festival. At Thiruveezhimizhalai, he got ‘Paddikassu’ and destroyed famines. Later, along with Appar Swamigal, he went to Thirumaraikattu temple and sang ‘Saduram Marai’ to put Thirukappu to temple. Appar sang to open the Thirukathavam.
Bringing Back Ashes to Life of Poomparai
Continuing his journey to revive and spread the sacred vedic tradition, he then went to Chennai, Mylapore. There, lived a rich merchant named Sivanesar Chettiyar. Despite being so wealthy, he had realised the truth that the real wealth was ‘Sivaperuman’ (Lord Shiva); and was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He had heard about Gnanasambandar, and began to spread his glory to all the people. He had no children, and respected the Sivanadiyargal. He arranged all the facilities for them.
Due to the grace of Lord Shiva, his wife was able to conceive a child and they were blessed with a baby girl. He named her Poomparai and loved her immensely. She grew up to be very beautiful.
The merchant’s love for his daughter made him believe that the perfect match and the only person worthy of her hand in marriage is Thiru Gnanasambandar. With this thought, he announced that he would be giving all his wealth to Gnanasambandar.
One day, Poomparai was plucking flowers with her friends and a snake bit her. The poison killed her immediately. Even after three days of treatment, they could not cure her. Sivanesar was deeply upset, but decided that since he had already handed his daughter to Gnanasambandar, he would not worry. He cremated her and preserved her bones and ashes in a jar. He treated the jar like how he would treat his daughter, if she was alive.
Gnanasambandar came to Mylapore to worship Kabaleshwar Peruman. On hearing this, Sivanesar went to receive him. People informed Gnanasambandar of the incident with Poomparai and of Sivanesar’s devotion towards him. He prayed to Kabaleshwar and asked Sivanesar to bring Poomparai’s jar of ashes in front of him. Feeling Lord Shiva in his heart, Gnanasambandar just gave the jar one look, and from that jar, came the beautiful form of Poomparai. Her hands were folded and she was the same age as she was on the day she died. She was as beautiful as ever. The sound of Shiva resounded till the heavens and all the Devas showered flowers on her. The entire village celebrated and congratulated her. Sivanesar and she fell at the feet of Gnanasambandhar.
With palms folded, Chettiyar humbly requested Sambandar to take Poomparai home and marry her. To this, Sambandar replied, “Your daughter died because of a snake bite. I have given her life once more by Sivaperuman’s grace. Now, she is equal to my own daughter. I cannot accept your request.” This brought peace to Sivanesar’s heart.
After that, Thiru Gnanasambandar had a darshan of Kabaleshwar. Sivanesar announced that his daughter will not marry anyone and she remained a Sannyasi at a Mutt. She reached Sivapatham. Gnana Sambandhar stayed at Mylapore for a few days, and then reached Thiruvanmiyur.
There, he sang songs in praise of Sivaperuman. Later, he reached Thiru Edaisuram temple. He prayed to Sivaperuman with bundles of love. Thiruvadisulam thalathil Gnanasambandar was dissolving on seeing the beauty of Sivapatham. Blissfully, he sang Sivapathigam. He stayed at Thiruvadisulam for a few days and left to Thirukazhikundram, Achirupakkam, Arasila, Panang Kattur and had darshan (vision) of Siva Peruman at all these places.
After visiting many temples, he reached Thullai and had darshan of Nataraja peruman. His father Sivapaada irudayar and other devotees came from Sirkazhi and reached Chidambaram.
He went to Sirkali on request of his devotees later on, and was received in a grand way. Then, to Thiruthoniappar temple, where he was totally dissolving into Him and went to his place at ‘Eratti Theru’.
Marriage of Thiru Gnanasambandhar
Thiru Gnanasambandar was very handsome and attained the age of marriage. His parents requested him to get married. He accepted this as it was a part of his duty. Everyone was happy with this decision. Marriage arrangements and rituals were done in a grand manner. Marriage rituals were happening in both Sirkali and Thirunallur perumanam. Gnanasambandar had bath, wore new clothes and reached thirunallur.
Thiruneelanakka nayanar performed the rituals. Gnanasambandar held his Deviyar thothira poornambikai in his hands and sang ‘Kallur Perumanam Venda’.
Merging into the Shivajyoti
At that time, between Sivaloga Natharukkum, Nangai Umaiammaikkum, above perarul perunjothi, appeared. On seeing the Jyothi, Gnanasambandhar said the words, “We have to reach this marriage only,” and held Thothirapernambigai’s hand. For the world to raise in a higher state of consciousness, he gave the Namahshivaya Thirupathigam, saying “whoever wants to raise yourself to this state can join me.” He and the crowd dissolved into the Sivajyoti. Thiruchitrabalam.
Thirujnanasambhandar - Incarnation of Shiva
The 63 Leela’s of Shiva; please understand, 64 Leels’s are described, but one Leela is his presence; no action, that is why I am saying 63 Leelas; 63 are only actions. The word Leela can be attributed only to action, not for presence. So, in that 64, one is presence, no action, 63 are action. In that 63 you will be surprised, the Leela done by Thiru Jnansambhandar, winning the Jain preachers through the fire test and water test is also added. Please understand, this means, Jnansambhandar was directly respected and accepted as Shiva’s incarnation; that is the reason, even though this Leela is done by Thiru Jnansambhandar it is added in the Leelas of Shiva. Please understand, in all other Leelas, Shiva directly comes down and executes the Leela. Shiva assumes the human body and does the actions, but this one, winning the Jain monks and establishing the Saiva tradition by the water test and fire test, it is done by Thiru Jnansambhandar, but it is added in that 64 Leelas, means even at that time, when he was living in the body, he was recognized, accepted, worshiped as directly Shiva’s incarnation. Leela’s done by Thirunavakarasar was never considered as Shiva Leela, it is done by Thirunavakarasar, through the grace of Shiva. Leelas done by Sundarar was never recorded as Shiva Leela’s. It is Leelas done by Sundarar, through Shiva, but Leelas done by Thiru JnanaSambhandar, directly recorded as Shiva Leela. Jnanasambhandar was widely accepted, recognized, revered, worshiped as an incarnation of Shiva Himself, Mahadeva Himself!
Story of Thirujnanasambhandar From HH Paramahamsa Nithyananda Paramashivam
FEELING CONNECTION- THE ULTIMATE TECHNIQUE
Today, I will describe the exact scene of the revival of Madurai Aadhenam. There was a time, arrogant, intellectual; but not intelligent, cunning; but not compassionate; experimenting; but not experienced, few monks from the perverted Jainic tradition (please understand not the real Jain tradition. The real Jainism is a powerful spiritual tradition). In course of time, the perverted , diverted Jaina tradition, few so called priests and monks have evolved who have started only using the wealth and the tradition to fulfill their own ends; who are not honest, authentic or sincere or integrated. Whenever a Living Master leaves the body, the inevitable corruption, perversion which happens in the tradition, has happened to Jainism also at that time. So, few Jain monks very influential but not impressive; powerful but not energetic. Understand, ‘power’ means , the capacity which comes to you after something from outside is added. Energy means the capacity which comes to you without anything from outside. ‘Powerful’ but not ‘Energetic’; having the status of a leader; but not the state of leadership. Those few fellows were ruling the country and misguiding the king; poor king ; unfortunately, because no other option, he was also obeying them, listening; and these few perverted priests and preachers slowly, slowly started grabbing the whole country. The very growth of the country started getting disturbed and destroyed, detracted by these few Jain monks. The Queen of the king, wife of the king, Mangaikarasiyar, a great lady, woman, stature of a sage, still worshiped in all Hindu temples of South India as one of the enlightened saints of Saiva tradition. I can imagine how she would’ve looked, how she would’ve been, lived, how she would’ve been living, thinking; a saintly person, highly evolved devotee of Shiva, Mahadeva. She started getting worried, she started having a deep concern for the country and citizens. Please understand, those days, rulers were very concerned about the conscious evolution of the citizens also, not just food, clothes, education and infrastructure of the country, No! Consciousness of the country was also very important for them . What you believe is more important than what you eat, or what you drive and where you live. What you believe as life is important than the car you drive, the house you live, the salary you receive, the language you speak or the food you eat, the dress you wear. What you believe as life is too precious to be lost with some fools.
So, Mangaikarasiyar was highly worried, she slowly started feeling suffocated to be in the palace and unable to do anything for the conscious growth of the citizens. She herself was a highly evolved saint, but as you know, wives are never heard, nor respected, can never be accepted especially by a King. For a King to listen to his wife, Queen was too much!! For a King! His name is Goon Pandian because he had a bent back. In Tamil the bent back is called ‘goon’. Of course he was surrounded by goons, so, in a way, the name fits in English and Tamil both! His back was bent, he was not ready to listen to Mangaikarasiyar, the Queen. She tried her best to convince Goon Pandian.
The complete consciousness growth can happen only if emotion also evolves. Please understand, the key difference between the Jainism practiced at that time and the Saivisim, is the sacred sentiments for emotional evolvement. Please understand, Jainisim had literally everything Saivism had; Vedic tradition had. They had yoga, they had tapas, they had meditation, they had everything. For the growth of the body; yoga, for the growth of the mind; meditation; for the growth of the consciousness; Enlightenment. All Concepts were available, even in those days in Jainism, but for the growth of consciousness, the sacred sentiments; the ability to feel connected, the ability to melt, the ability to merge with the Divine, the ability to radiate humbleness, unfortunately, that was missing! The ability to feeling connected, when that misses, even the meditation and the extraordinary powers and experiences you receive, only makes you more egoistic. It only makes you more egocentric, more arrogant, more abusive.
But, Mangaikarasiyar, the great queen of the Pandya kingdom, is unable to handle this situation. She was completely, disturbed, perturbed, shaken, shivering. She slowly asks the King, Oh Lord! You are suffering with hunchback, this bent back for such a long time, Can I invite a young healer from the Tanjore district, from Chola kingdom, who is well known for his healing powers? The king’s eyes slowly opened wide: “Is it so”? He was thinking, contemplating, but the moment Mangaikarasiyar said, he is from Saiva tradition, No! No! I don’t want to meet anybody from Saiva tradition, Leave it! The King said No! Mangaikarasiyar could not say anything, she left it. But, again after few days, she asked the King, Oh Lord!, why don’t you at least ask these Jain monks who are constantly putting all different ideas into your head, who are bending your brain also, to straighten your back? He said, alright, I will ask them. He called those few monks, they came and they tried as usual, some chanting, this, that.. nothing worked and they only were giving empty words, “No, No, life is impermanent, your body itself is impermanent, why do you want to straighten it? Whether is straight bent, anyhow it is going to be burnt”. Understand, if all these words are uttered to raise the King towards enlightenment, then it is perfectly alright, nothing wrong. But if all these words are uttered to cover up their inability, then something is wrong.
The other day, he was giving a discourse and saying , all these materializations, giving boons, healing and all is not enlightenment, not spirituality. Come on! If you are able to do and do not want to do , great! prove at least once; but don’t use all this philosophy to cover up your inability. These monks also, these preachers, they were trying to do the same thing. They tried to use the philosophy to cover up their inability. Don’t use philosophy to cover up your inability. Use philosophy to create more and more ability. Philosophy should be used to expand your abilities; not to cover up your inabilities. These monks were trying to cover up their inabilities. Queen Mangaikarasiyar, intervened the scene, told the King, No, enough! We had enough of words, words, words, words!! Now, even if the body is impermanent, we want somebody who will straighten it till it dies, even if it is going to be just next days, we want somebody who will do the job! Not that who will sit and talk, talk, talk, talk …Its like your car has become repair, you take it to the shed, and you tell him to repair it, and that fellow sits and give you a discourse on how the world is impermanent, Why do you need a car? Why do you first of all need to walk? Why do you come out of your house? Why don’t you sit inside your house itself? We have not come to the car shed for listening to a discourse! We have come to the car shed to get our car repaired. Her great intelligence, the Mangaikarasiyar intervened and told those preachers, No!, we don’t want anymore empty words, we don’t want to listen to anymore: the empty discourses, No!, we want results.
Finally, the Queen was able to convince the Goon Pandian, the King to invite Thiru Jnana Sambhandar, the great saint, the young healer from Chola Kingdom. Finally, the Goon Pandian, thought, alright, anyhow, why not give a try. She talks so much about him, Goon Pandian, also knows, all the husbands even though they don’t listen to their wives, they know their wives are more intelligent than them. Inside their heart, they know, we may not listen to her because of our ego and ideas, but she is intelligent, they know! So, finally he thought , alright, why not give a try.
Finally, Mangaikarasiyar just took the nod of Goon Pandian, sends a grand invitation, with the palanquin, all the traditional paraphernalia to invite Thiru Jnana Sambhandar, the great saint. The invitation reaches Thiru Jnana Sambhandar. He was exactly in the same situation, when I was offered to accept this Madurai Aadhenam throne. When 292 Guru Mahasannidham himself came to Karnataka Desa and invited me, “Please come and become the Madurai Aadhenam,”; One side I was in ecstasy, surprised! the other side, Oh God!, all these fellows how to handle, there are so many preachers, perverted preachers who are sitting on empty books, who will come to fight with me, how to handle? But, finally Jnana Sambhandar decides to accept.
The moment Jnana Sambhandar accepted the invitation, in the other country, these priests have started shivering, literally shattered, they are preparing for the protests, the meeting is going on in their mutts, all of them have gathered, passed a resolution.. Jnana Sambhandar has a big hair how can he be a saint? A monk should have a shaved head. All these great “loosu’ discussions were going on. And even the people who were around Thiru Jnana Sambhandar, a great saint ThiruNavukarasar, even he said, Oh Lord! Why don’t you reconsider your decision to go to Madurai? Now, the time is not proper; King is also not in tune with the teachings and philosophy you are giving, please why don’t you consider, even he was discouraging; its like a opposition from externally and some opposition even from the friends and the well wishers. But Thiru Jnana Sambhandar he knows what he’s doing, and he knows what he has to do. He knows what he’s doing and he knows what he has to do ; he knows his avataric mission. He says, I am coming and he remembers Shiva and all the 9 planets, navagrahas, sings beautiful verses on them asking for their Divine protection, and Shiva’s grace. Its called “Golar Padikam; these verses are beautiful verses to remove all the negativities; negative effects by planets.
We can listen to at least one verse from the “Golar Padikam”:
“Veyuru tholi pangan, vidamunda kandan, miganalla veenai thadaivi,
Meaning, beautiful meaning! Let me translate for you guys: He says, Shiva, who has Devi as a part of himself, who has swallowed collective negativity, the alaghala poison, He has swallowed even the whole collective negativity, alaghala poison. That great being Shiva, Mahadeva who has destroyed all negativities, when He’s sitting in my heart, in my being, how can these 9 planets, small negativity can hurt me? They will do only good to all the devotees of Shiva. He declares the power of Feeling Connection, the Devotion! Understand, Feeling connection is the ultimate technique. You don’t any other solution, method to get out of any problem. Problems of planets, disease, negativity , black magic anything!! Jnana Sambhandar knows that one Feeling Connection is enough.
He says beautifully: “Veyuru tholi pangan, vidamunda kandan, miganalla veenai thadaivi, maasar thingal gangai mudimel athanal, en ullame pughunda adanal, naayar thingal , sevai bhudan, vzhazhan, vellai sani, paambum irandum udane aasar nalla, nalla, avai nalla nalla adiyar avarku migave”.
“Veyuru tholi pangan, vidamunda kandan”, describes the beauty of Shiva; the beauty of the shoulder of Shiva. See, now he is inviting Shiva to protect him, protect Jnana Sambhandar, so he’s describing the beauty of the shoulders of Shiva; “Veyuru tholi pangan”; the shoulder like bamboo which is hosting Devi.. He’s singing the masculine grandeur and the feminine grace; the masculine shoulder which is hosting the feminine consciousness; who has swallowed even the collective negativity: the alaghala poison, and He is sitting in my being; “en ullame pughunda adanal”; He’s sitting in my heart. When He is sitting in my heart; all the grahas will only do good to me ; will only do good to all the devotees.
He sings 10 verses and decides to go to Madurai, accepting the invitation. In Madurai, he was received in a grand way, by the Queen Mangaikarasiyar. Now starts all the fight! The Jain preachers who are not able to handle the whole situation were shocked, shivering, shattered, blabbering….they don’t even know what they are saying.. Just blabbering!!
