Kena Upanishad

Etymology

The word ‘kena ‘means ‘whom’. Kena means, exactly the word means ‘whom’, ‘by whom – keneṣitaṁ – by whom willed or or directed’ – directing the enquiry of the Truth to its very Source, is the seed of Kenopanishad. This Upanishad directs your seeking to the Source.

Scriptural Reference

The Upanishad appears as the 9th chapter of the Talavakara Brahmana of the Sāma Veda, and also known Talavakara Upanishad or Jaimini Brahmana. 35 verses and Shanti Mantra. Its one of the very important Upanishads and per the Muktikopanishad, it’s the second Upanishad in the whole order. Upanishad is also called, known as Talavakara Upanishad.

Introduction

Each Upanishad gives a thought current. Not an answer.

The subject matter of Kenopanishad deals with multiple sacred secrets, sacred truths, but important sacred truth – the essence is WHOM AM I? By WHOM, by whose will, everything came to existence.

Enquiring into you is Seeking. Enquiring into the Source is Seeking the very Source.

If you entertain the thought current of Kenopanishad you will not get an answer of who created this world. But if you go through the thought current of Kenopanishad you will just KNOW where from this whole thing happened, how it is related to you, how you are related to it, how the whole thing can exist and co-exist in the space of completion.

Devi, the Guru of Kena Upanishad

In this Upanishad, Devi is the Guru. Understand, it’s directly from Devi. Uma, first time the word ‘Uma’ appears in this Upanishad. Devi is addressed as ‘Uma’ in this Upanishad. The word – ‘Ishvara, Isha’ – is used for Mahadev in the first Upanishad. The word ‘Uma’ is used for Devi in this Upanishad.

Ability to Will

In the Isavasya Upanishad, the prayer is soham’asmi – even when I am praying, you and me are from the same Source, oh Source make what I want as a reality.

The Kena Upanishad takes it to the next level, with a declaration not prayer – me, my ability to will.

Understand, just like you have various abilities; the ability to see, ability to use your hands, ability to use your legs, ability to listen, ability to think, you have something called the ABILITY TO WILL. The ability to will integrates all of your abilities. The ability to will is the spiritual umbilical cord, connection with Cosmos. Understand, other than God, no one can will. When we are told only God’s will be done, means actually no one else can have WILL. Only God can have WILL. If you are having the power to will, you are connected to God, you are part of God, you are Him.Understand. The power to will is umbilical connection with God.
