A man in a rust-red dhoti and a red-and-gold flower garland, with a red-and-yellow marigold mala and gold necklaces, stands at right holding a rope and gazing upward as he raises the staff. Devotees sit under a corrugated roof at left, watching the ritual, with a palm tree and greenery behind.2016-08-27Photograph looking up at a tall, copper-clad ritual pole rising from an ornately carved wooden base wrapped with yellow marigold garlands and red flowers. At the top a small red-and-orange figure hangs from the pole's crown, and a rope runs down from it. In the lower right a single person in orange robes and a rudraksha-style bead necklace stands on the ground, arms raised, holding the orange cloth and ropes that lead up to the pole. Palm fronds and a covered roof edge frame the view against a bright sky.2011-08-23A tall copper flagstaff, or dhvaja stambha, rises toward a clear blue sky, its ringed shaft wrapped with bands of carved ornament. Its base is draped with green leaves, straw-like grass and garlands of white and red flowers, and a small deity murti stands at the base. A yellow marigold garland with grass hangs from a rope at left beside a metal roof. At lower right, a man in an orange-red dhoti and shawl, wearing a rudraksha-style mala of beads and a flower garland, a vertical tilak on his forehead, holds the rope that raises the pole with one hand. Palm fronds appear at the edges.2015-02-23February 23 20152015-02-23A tall copper dhwajasthambha (flagstaff) rises steeply against a bright sky, its ringed shaft topped with a carved finial and wrapped at the base with fresh green leaves, grass and white-and-red flower garlands on a carved stone pedestal. A man in saffron-orange dhoti and shawl, wearing layered coral-and-gold necklaces and armlets, stands at right beside a coconut palm and pulls a rope to hoist a saffron flag up the pole. Overhead a metal roof edge frames the view. Only one person is visible, and his face is turned upward, so the identity of the flag-raiser cannot be confirmed from appearance.2015-02-23
