January 05 20142014-01-05January 05 20142014-01-05A photograph of a fire ritual at night beside a stone-edged homa pit with a large flame. A shaved-headed person in white ritual clothes with gold-bordered cloth sits on the ground at the left, with white ash markings on the upper arm and a wooden ladle in hand, offering into the fire. In front are brass bowls, a small oil lamp and plates of kumkum and offerings. Behind them, a draped red altar holds several kalasha pots dressed with blue and red cloth, silver necklaces and yellow marigold garlands. A lit framed image of a deity is at the upper left, with strings of coloured lights above. The visible person is in white and does not match an appearance-based a person candidate, so the role is ritual participant.2013-12-21A ritual scene at night: a priest in an orange-red turban and orange-red dhoti stands bare-chested behind a yellow cloth-draped table stacked with yellow blocks, with brass vessels and an oil lamp above. He wears a heavy gold necklace, a gold armband, and white markings on his arms and chest, and holds ritual sticks in his hands. To the right, a deity murti or kalasha sits on a red brocade altar beneath a golden fringed umbrella, decorated with coconuts, green leaves and a blue cloth. Two devotees' heads are visible in the foreground, watching the rite.2014-01-05January 11 20142014-01-11January 05 20142014-01-05A photograph of a night-time ritual at a shrine. A bare-chested priest in an orange-red turban and orange-red dhoti stands behind a low table stacked with yellow-wrapped blocks and brass vessels, lighting an oil lamp or performing an offering with smoke rising. He wears a thick gold-and-beaded necklace and bangles. To the right, a decorated altar under a yellow fringed umbrella holds coconuts, green leaves, a blue cloth and a red garland. Two seated devotees in dark clothing are in the foreground with their backs to the camera. The scene is lit warmly against a dark background. Whether this priest is a person cannot be established from appearance, so the figure is described by role only.2014-01-05May 22 20142014-05-22 +1 copiesNight photograph of a temple ritual outdoors. A young priest in saffron-orange dhoti and matching upper cloth, with a rudraksha mala and gold armlets, stands behind a table draped with purple and blue cloths. He holds a silver vessel with a small lamp aloft in one hand while a smoking censer or flame rises beside him. Several brass and copper kalasha pots wrapped in orange and gold cloth and garlanded with yellow marigolds sit on the table. Red pillars and a dark night background frame the scene. No physical face is identified; the figure is a priest performing an aarti-style offering.2013-10-07January 11 20142014-01-11October 18 20122012-10-18Night outdoor photo of a young man in a rust-orange turban and orange-red shawl over bare shoulders, wearing a beaded rudraksha-style mala and gold-toned necklace, holding a bundle of grass stalks over a decorated kalasha with a white cloth and a yellow marigold garland. Coconuts with green leaves sit in front, and a red cloth covers part of an altar-like arrangement. A blurred shrub and lit building appear behind. The setting suggests a ritual puja at an outdoor altar. No a person candidate can be confidently identified from appearance, so the figure is described only by role as a ritual participant.2014-05-21
