October 13 20132013-10-13A night ritual photograph in which a shaved-headed man in saffron-orange robes and a long gold bead necklace holds a silver aarti lamp with a large open flame, performing the flame offering. Behind him a man in white with a yellow shawl stands with palms pressed together in namaste. At the lower left, a seated man in white and yellow holds another lit lamp. Fresh banana leaves and neem leaves hang above, smoke drifts through the scene, and brass plates with yellow flower petals and offerings lie in the foreground. The orange-robed man is a person by appearance: a saffron robe, ornate gold beads and the central role in the aarti, though the appearance is only partly distinctive.2009-09-25October 29 20162016-10-29October 29 20162016-10-29A man in saffron-orange robes and an orange turban stands in smoky light holding a silver tray with a lit brass oil lamp of three flames. He wears a rudraksha mala and a gold-coloured garland over his shoulder and has beaded bracelets on his wrist. Behind him, an ornate decorated structure with red, yellow and white floral patterns and a gilded top forms the backdrop, with another figure partly visible beside it. Swamiji (probable): the orange turban, saffron robes, rudraksha mala and ornate garland match the presentation cues, and he is performing the aarti as the officiant.2015-04-30December 20 20132013-12-20October 29 20162016-10-29Night-time ritual at an outdoor pandal with banana leaves and smoke in the air. A shaven-headed man in a saffron-orange robe with maroon borders and a gold chain with a pendant stands at right, holding a brass aarti lamp with a flaming wick over the head of a seated young man in white kurta, yellow shawl and rudraksha mala who has his palms raised. Yellow and orange marigold petals are scattered on the stone platform in front, with brass vessels and a bell visible. Other seated devotees in orange and yellow sit behind. The orange-robed man shows no clear a person cues such as long hair or ornate crown, so his identity is uncertain.2009-09-25A photograph of a ritual at night under a leafy canopy strung with dried leaves and fabric. A man in an orange saffron dhoti and shawl with a beaded rudraksha-style mala stands at centre holding a silver aarti plate with a burning flame and red and yellow flower offerings, performing aarti. Smoke drifts through the frame. In the foreground right, a brass oil lamp with lit wicks and yellow flowers stands near the camera. Behind, a few seated people in yellow and white garments, one holding a microphone, are partly visible at the edges of the frame.2009-10-17A standing figure in saffron-orange robes with a hooded drape and a gold-beaded necklace holds a lit multi-wick brass aarti lamp in one hand and a small bell in the other during an evening ritual. Smoke fills the air, and a fire pit sits in front of him edged with yellow marigold petals, with silver and brass vessels and offerings on a tray. Seated devotees in white clothes with yellow shawls press their palms together, and one wears a rudraksha mala. Green palm fronds hang overhead. The lamp flame and aarti gesture suggest an aarti performed during a homa.2009-09-25December 28 20112011-12-28Photograph of an indoor stage with a red carpet strewn with flower petals. A figure in an orange-red turban and orange-red draped garment with gold border, with a rudraksha-style mala at the neck, holds a lit brass aarti lamp with several flames aloft in both hands. Behind and to the right, two men in white dhotis and white shirts stand, one holding a small metal vessel. Garlands hang on the wall beside a decorative carved panel, and a few seated audience members are visible at the left edge. A draped cloth canopy hangs overhead.2003-11-16
