July 11 20062006-07-11A night-time outdoor photograph of a small group seated on dry grass beneath a large tree. On the left, a figure with long dark hair in a saffron/orange robe sits on a folding chair facing the group, with bare feet and a saffron shawl; this is an appearance-based Swamiji (probable) candidate in a teaching role. Around him, roughly a dozen devotees sit cross-legged or kneel in white dhotis and white kurtas or saris, many wearing saffron shawls and white beaded necklaces. A woman in a white sari and another in a saffron shawl sit at right, and a person in white stands at the far left edge. An orange woven basket sits on the grass in the foreground. The scene suggests a satsang or evening discourse held outdoors.2008-11-13November 19 20092009-11-19Night-time outdoor photo on a sandy ground under dark trees. In the foreground a young man with long dark hair wears a saffron-orange robe with a yellow-edged wrap and a white flower garland, his right hand raised to his chest. A seated figure at right, wearing an orange robe with long dark hair, sits on a white cushioned seat draped with a purple and white cloth, facing the gathering. Rows of people in orange robes sit on mats on sandy ground, many holding long thin rods or sticks with small orange flags, and some hold brass vessels and small plates. On the left, a person in orange robes kneels beside a red-painted deity murti on a stone base, with brass lamps and a small fire or incense smoke rising. Several people in white clothes stand and sit among the crowd under the trees. Soft late-afternoon light filters through the leaves.2006-12-09A night-time gathering in an open courtyard of a temple-style ashram. A man in a rust-orange robe with rudraksha malas sits on a raised seat with an ornate silver-framed back, in front of a central square yajna-style pit or fire pit. Around him, many devotees in orange and red-saffron robes with gold borders sit on the ground in rows; many have shaved heads and some wear white tilak markings, while several women wear orange saris and beaded necklaces. Brass plates, oil lamps and a small offering setup sit near the pit. A dark statue of a standing deity is visible on a ledge at upper right, and a garden with plants and steps frames the scene. The seated man's identity is not established from appearance.2013-03-18Night-time outdoor ritual scene with a central fire pit (homa) lined with brick, surrounded by seated devotees in saffron-orange robes with gold-bordered sashes and rudraksha malas. A man with long dark hair, wearing an orange robe and beaded mala, sits on a white ornate throne-like seat behind the fire pit, a probable Swamiji by appearance cues of long hair, saffron clothing and rudraksha beads. Around him, white-clad and orange-clad participants sit on the ground; several women wear gold-bordered saffron saris and some have white and red forehead markings. Brass pots, bowls and ritual vessels sit beside the pit, a tiered oil lamp and a small drum rest near the front, and potted plants, a white fan and a red-and-white striped wall frame the courtyard. Roughly two dozen people are visible.2013-03-18Outdoor satsang under a large banyan tree with many saffron-robed disciples seated on the ground in rows. A long-haired figure in orange robes, wearing gold bangles and beaded necklaces, sits on a low wooden stool at left and gestures with an outstretched hand toward the group, appearing to teach. Many of the seated devotees have shaved heads and white tilak marks on their foreheads, and some wear rudraksha malas. Several other saffron-clad people stand in the background among the trees.2013-03-10Night outdoor ritual beneath a large banyan-like tree with hanging aerial roots, decorated with a strand of white and orange flower garlands. A woman in orange robes stands and holds a lit aarti lamp with flame toward the viewer. Around her, a group of people in orange clothing sit on the sand with palms pressed together in prayer, several of them women with orange saris and some men with shaved heads. In the lower right, a second person in orange garments sits beside a flower-covered pillar, and a small brass kalasha and a shallow pit with white offerings sit on the ground. A red-upholstered chair stands nearby. The scene is lit warmly by the flame and dim surrounding light.2006-07-11Outdoor photo beneath a large banyan tree with aerial roots. A long-haired man bare-chested with a saffron dhoti and rudraksha malas and gold bead necklaces stands at right facing a seated group of many saffron-robed devotees, most with shaved heads and white tilak markings on their foreheads. A trident stands upright behind him beside a white kalasha-like urn. Seated students in saffron clothing and rudraksha beads listen attentively on a stone platform, one child at lower left. The setting suggests a satsang discourse.2013-03-10
