A standing man in saffron-orange robes and a matching hood, with gold beaded necklaces and bangles, holds a lit flame on a brass lamp and performs aarti. Several seated participants in white clothing with yellow shawls surround him; one holds a brass plate of offerings, and another plays a round frame drum. A microphone stands at left, and smoke drifts through the scene. A man in red-orange garments with a beaded necklace sits near the microphone.2009-09-25April 23 20132013-04-23 +2 copiesA night-time photograph of a group of men in white ritual dhotis and shawls gathered under a corrugated roof, holding their hands together in prayer or reaching toward a lit oil lamp. A man in an orange-saffron garment with a tall ornate crown, a gold-beaded necklace and rudraksha-style beads holds the brass lamp with a bright flame, passing it among devotees; smoke rises above the flame. Several men wear white dhotis with sandalwood or vibhuti marks on their foreheads and rudraksha malas. The setting suggests a lamp-lighting ritual, possibly a Kartheekai Deepam aarti.2010-11-21Night photograph of two shaved-headed priests performing aarti outdoors beside a brick wall and foliage. The priest on the right, in an orange-saffron dhoti and shawl with white forehead markings and earrings, holds a large brass aarti lamp with a bright flame and smoke rising. The priest on the left, seen from behind in a brown-maroon robe with a gold-edged cloth and rudraksha beads, extends his hand toward the flame. A small brass bell rests near the lamp base. Warm firelight contrasts with the dark greenery.2015-11-24Outdoor evening scene at night with a lit oil lamp on a silver stand held by a man in white dhoti and shawl with red-bordered edges and a gold-beaded necklace, performing aarti. In front, a woman in saffron-orange dress with long dark hair and gold necklace stands with palms pressed together in namaste. Behind her, men in saffron-orange robes with rudraksha-style malas and white-clad attendants stand in a dark garden with tropical foliage. Flame and palms are prominent elements.2010-11-21October 21 20152015-10-21 +1 copiesNight ritual in an open-air courtyard under a dark roof. A man in an orange-red dhoti and shawl, with a rudraksha mala and a gold ceremonial necklace, stands at centre holding a lit flame on a silver tray above a silver-decorated stand. Around him, many devotees in matching orange-red robes with gold borders sit or kneel with palms joined in prayer, some with rudraksha malas and white markings on their foreheads. Brass lamps and bowls with flames are set on mats in the foreground, and a fan and potted plants stand at the right. The flame and lamps indicate an aarti ritual.2013-03-18January 01 20142014-01-01December 18 20132013-12-18
