He stands close to the massive grey trunk of a banyan tree with hanging aerial roots, leaning his head and forehead against the bark in a devotional posture. Dark foliage fills the background, and a long wooden staff rests on the ground at lower left.2013-04-24November 12 20102010-11-12Night photograph at an outdoor sacred site beneath a large banyan tree with exposed aerial roots. Two people stand with palms pressed together in namaskar on a sandy ground. The nearer figure wears a deep red-maroon sari with a gold-striped border, a garland of red and white flowers, and a dark patterned shawl over the shoulders. A second person in a red and gold-bordered sari stands behind to the left. A white cloth and a wooden plank lie on the ground near the feet, with a stone block nearby. Lamplight from a bright light source illuminates the scene, and a stone platform with rubble lies in the background.2014-05-27Night photograph of a large banyan tree with many hanging aerial roots and a thick trunk, set on a bare sandy ground. A figure in saffron-orange robes with long dark hair stands at right, back partly turned, holding a small lit oil lamp in one hand toward the tree. The surrounding area is dark with trees in the background.2007-02-25A figure in an orange-saffron dhoti and shawl with gold borders stands at night embracing a huge, root-wrapped banyan-type tree trunk, face pressed against the bark with hands joined near the chest. A white and red flower garland hangs over the shoulder. Marigold petals and yellow flowers lie scattered on the ground at the base, and red-and-yellow garlands and turmeric-kumkum marks decorate the trunk. The scene is dark, lit only faintly.2007-01-01November 12 20102010-11-12February 05 20142014-02-05A photograph taken at night of a woman in an orange saffron sari with a gold border and a white and yellow flower garland, holding a brass bell in one hand and a small brass lamp with a lit flame in the other, performing aarti before a large banyan tree trunk. The tree's aerial roots hang and twist around the trunk, and several sections of the trunk are marked with red and yellow kumkum/turmeric and garlanded with marigolds and red flowers. A basket of flowers and green leaves sits at the lower left edge, and a second person in white stands partly visible behind her.2007-01-01January 01 20202020-01-01A photograph taken at night of a figure in an orange silk garment with a wide gold border, draped over the shoulder and torso, with bare feet, pressing one hand against the thick aerial roots of a large banyan tree trunk. A white and red garland hangs over the shoulder, and a second garland of yellow and red flowers is looped on the trunk to the right. Scattered marigold petals and flower heads lie on the sandy ground at the base of the tree. A second, partly visible person in white clothes stands in the dark background at left. The lighting is a harsh spotlight on the ground, leaving the rest of the scene in shadow. Possibly a ritual circumambulation or veneration of the tree. A white cloth hangs at the upper left corner.2007-01-01
