October 23 20062006-10-23October 23 20062006-10-23A photograph of a man in white clothes with an orange shawl draped over his shoulder, performing an aarti with a bright flame in front of a wall niche decorated with purple flowers and a garland. Inside the niche, a framed deity picture with a white-and-red flower garland hangs above a small offering of flowers and a lamp on the floor. Two other framed religious pictures are also in the niche. The man's face is not visible, so no identity is given; only a priest or devotee performing puja is described.2006-10-09A home shrine room with framed deity prints on the wall, each garlanded with marigold and rose chains. A man in a saffron-orange robe with a long multicoloured flower garland holds a lit oil lamp in one hand and a brass bell in the other, performing aarti before the shrine. Beside him, an older man in white shirt and trousers stands with palms pressed together in prayer. In the foreground at left, a person in orange clothing with dark hair faces the shrine. On the shrine table are a brass lamp, a brass kalasha-style vessel, a small brass deity figure decorated with red and pink flowers, and a framed picture garlanded with white flowers.2010-02-17Two sannyasis in orange and red robes stand at a shrine room, facing an ornate wooden throne-like seat draped in a blue and gold cloth. A framed portrait on the throne shows a man in saffron robes with a beaded necklace, one hand raised in blessing, seated in a meditative pose. Garlands of marigolds and a brass oil lamp sit before the seat, with a small offering table of brass vessels and flowers in front. The man on the right, in a red sleeveless top over an orange wrap, holds a lit oil lamp for worship. Brass lamps stand beside the throne, and a white and gold cloth covers a box on the floor. The floor is decorated with a colourful rangoli design.2009-02-24A standing figure in an orange saffron wrap with a white border and long dark wavy hair faces a small home shrine, lifting a flaming oil lamp with the right hand while the left hand steadies the brass stand. On the shelf below a large framed painting of a saffron-robed figure with a mala and a bearded figure under a banyan tree, there are brass lamps, a deity murti, a framed picture of a white-turbaned saint, and a small kalasha-like object. A woman in a white sari with a mala and folded hands, standing at the right, watches in prayer. A turquoise refrigerator stands at the left. The scene is an aarti or puja at a home altar.2012-01-03Photograph of a domestic shrine room with framed deity paintings on the walls and a dark wooden altar ledge holding oil lamps, brass plates and small offerings. A bare-chested priest in white dhoti and shawl, with a sacred thread, stands at left tending the altar. A woman in a bright orange sari, with long hair and a flower garland, stands at centre extending her hand toward the shrine. Behind her another woman in orange stands near a large framed portrait of a bearded sannyasi in red and orange robes holding a staff. At right a man in a white shirt and glasses stands with palms pressed together in namaskar, and a woman in a green sari is partly visible at the edge.2010-02-16October 20 20062006-10-20A home shrine (puja room) with a white arched canopy trimmed in gold and green mango-leaf festoons. Inside, a framed deity murti of a standing figure adorned with flower garlands sits centre, surrounded by marigold and rose garlands and small framed pictures. Four people are visible: a bald man in orange robes at the lower left, a woman in an orange sari with a red and white flower garland at the left, a man with long swept-back hair in orange robes holding a lit camphor flame on a plate with rose petals and a brass lamp, and a man in a white shirt with a rudraksha mala and palms pressed together at the right. Brass vessels and an arati flame are part of the ritual; the scene reads as a home padapuja or aarti.2010-01-10July 28 20082008-07-28January 23 20102010-01-23January 23 20102010-01-23
