Most wear white or cream clothing, several wear saffron/orange sarees and dhotis, and a few have red-and-yellow borders. An elderly woman in orange sari sits near the center, with a woman in white with a red bindi beside her. A woman in a red-and-white outfit leans forward at right, and a man in a red garment stands at the far end of the row. Terraced stone steps with potted plants and empty stadium-style seating appear in the background, with lights reflecting on the dark water.2013-12-26Evening scene at the edge of a water tank, with women seated in a long row on a stone ledge performing a tharpanam offering. Most wear saffron-orange garments with red borders, while the women on the right wear white sarees with gold or cream borders. Several hold thin sticks or strands of kusha grass, and small brass or clay bowls with offerings sit on the ledge. Some have vibhuti or kumkum marks on their foreheads. Potted plants line the stepped bank behind them and bright lights reflect on the dark water. No person clearly matches a person's appearance, so no identity is attributed.2013-12-26Night photograph of a long row of people seated on the stone edge of a reflective water tank, with dark water in the foreground and terraced terracotta-tiled steps rising behind them. Many seated figures wear saffron and orange robes, some in deep red, while others wear white dhotis and white shawls, several with shaved heads. Some hold small lamps or flower offerings, with marigold petals scattered along the water's edge. A figure in white at the far left appears to sit higher on a platform, but the scene does not clearly show who is leading the ceremony. Warm lights reflect on the water.2013-12-26December 26 20132013-12-262005-SWAMIJI-DOING-GURUPUJA-AARATHI +2 copiesEvening outdoor gathering beneath a large banyan tree with dangling aerial roots and a branch lit by a spotlight. A figure seated on a rug at right, with long swept-back dark hair and a microphone before him, wears a saffron/orange robe and holds his palms together in prayer; a white shawl drapes over his shoulder. In front of him stands a brass tray with bananas, a brass vessel, small brass cups and oil lamps, and a flower arrangement at the edge. Around them, devotees in white clothes sit cross-legged with hands folded in prayer, including a woman in a lavender sari and a man with a white beard. Several more people in white sit in the background among the trees.2005-12-19 +2 copiesApril 12 20142014-04-12 +1 copiesNight photograph of a line of devotees descending stone steps beside a dark tank or pool, with a lit lamp-lined structure at upper left. Women in white saris with orange and yellow borders and men in white dhotis and orange or saffron shawls walk in a row, several with hands folded. A devotee in an orange garment and a white-clad figure near the right edge carry or hold items. Small oil lamps and a few artificial lights illuminate the scene. The setting suggests a Karthikai Deepam observance, though no lamps are clearly lit in a lamp-bearing ritual here.2008-12-11January 14 20052005-01-14 +2 copies
