Only when Swami tells it goes into your head.” Instead of you listening, you will be just poking the next person: “Listen, careful, don’t forget!” So better for these two days, don’t sit next to each other, so that you will listen for yourself. Most of the time I have seen, even if the friends they sit next to each other, what they do? They just call: “Hmm. You understand? How many times I told you, but see.” Instead of listening to the theme, they will start discussing with each other. By discussing with each other what can they create? Little more confusion. That’s all, not any solution.

+ | So, put your whole effort, think everything is for you, not for the next person; nothing is for next person. Everything is told to you. We always think, ‘Swami says. We are not so bad, we are only half-half.’ Yesterday somebody was telling me: asking the question “Swamiji we may not be totally enlightened but don’t you think that we have a little bit of wisdom? Don’t you think that we are half wise?”
+ | I tell you there is only two thing in the world: either Buddha or buddhu, either totally enlightened or total fool. There is no between. There is no fifty fifty. Either steam or water, that’s all. Maybe hot water but that does not mean it’s not water; even if it’s hot water, it will just put the fire off. Throw the hot water on the fire, you think that fire will not burn, you think the fire will burn? No. Even if it’s hot water, if you throw the water on the fire, fire will be quenched or fire will be put off. So hot water means, don’t think that it has lost its quality. Either steam or water that’s all, either buddha or buddhu, that’s all.

+ | So put your effort totally. Only then you can have the glimpse or total experience of this course. And one more very, very, very big plus point or a great opportunity. Of course, a few of you who have got relatives in Tamil Nadu, they know how fortunate you are. In India, a meditation camp means thirty thousand people attend, thirty thousand people attend. Of course, ASP we don't allow so much; but even then hundreds and hundreds. So it is very difficult to get a personal attention or a direct touch. But here you are fortunate. Even in the US, I think New York is the smallest crowd. Here only we have a smallest crowd. You are fortunate, be very clear. Surely you are fortunate. So any time if you don’t understand anything or if you don’t feel what I say is applicable to your life, you can immediately stop and put a question. You are welcome to crisscross. If you just sit as if listening to Ramayana or Bhagavata it is not that it is going to help you. Be very clear.

+ | [00:04:44] | ||
+ | |||
+ | See, when you go and sit and listen Ramayana or Bharata, you don’t need to wake up… you don’t need to remain awake. You know the whole story. Even if you sleep for half an hour, one hour, you can pick up. You know the whole story. Rama is going to go to the forest and then Anjaneya will be meeting Rama and then Sita will be kidnapped. Rama… Anjaneya will go to Lanka, then Rama will go to Lanka, Ravana will be killed and again Rama will have the Pattabhisheka. You know the whole story. Even if you miss one session or two session, you are not going to miss much. Half an hour you can sleep and half an hour you can attend. You can have both and you don't need to ask any question. There’s nothing to ask, the story is a story that’s all. So a religious discourse does not need your involvement but a spiritual class needs your involvement.
+ | |||
+ | [00:05:42] | ||
+ | |||
+ | You need to understand the whole thing. It is not that I’ll be speaking continuously and you will be sitting, no. It is something more, like a interaction. So whenever you don’t find something is directly applicable in your life, you can directly stop Me and question Me. You are welcome to question. Only then you will have the total effect of it. Unless you are convinced, unless you have understood the whole thing, how will you be able to put your whole effort in meditation? I have always seen the people; “No, no, Swamiji. I don’t need to understand, whatever you say, I will do.” But that is not going to help you. If you just do because I say, you will put only your conscious effort, what will happen to your unconscious? It will remain untouched. Only if you are convinced totally and then do the meditation it will have total effect of your whole being. So wherever you have a doubt, immediately raise your question.
+ | |||
+ | [00:06:57] | ||
+ | |||
+ | One thing, doubt is a energy clot; like a blood clot, energy clot. So as long as the energy clots are there, the full circulation of the energy will never happen. Doubt is an energy clot. So don’t let doubt to roll your mind. Any question, immediately you are open to ask. You are open to raise the question. And you have a very small group, you are fortunate you can ask any question. If the group is big then you will have your own reluctance or your own shy feeling, but here you don’t need to bother anything. Group is very small; you can always be free or open to open out.
+ | |||
+ | [00:07:53] | ||
+ | |||
+ | In India not only thousands attend, I will not even know who is doing what; because such big hall. How will you know? I can’t even get down or go round, but here it is not like that. Everyone can have a direct attention, so you are really fortunate. Use it totally. If possible, I’ll tell them to show some of the videos in the gaps; in the interval times, gap times you can see one or two Indian discourses, then you will see the crowd. So then you’ll understand how fortunate you are to sit or to have the instructions or the meditations directly one to one. It’s almost like one to one because we are hardly thirty people. Thirty and thirty thousand - understand. So we are hardly thirty people, really you are fortunate. So put your whole effort, think everything is for you and interact totally. There are the three instructions, gist of this whole session.
+ | |||
+ | [00:09:10] | ||
+ | |||
+ | Now we will be entering into the meditations session. Before entering, I want you to introduce yourself to every one of you. Please go round and introduce yourself to everyone. You may ask why? Because this next two days you are going to be next to each other. Someone will be sitting here, someone will be sitting there. Someone will be sitting there, you will be sitting next to somebody, next to any person; anybody may be sitting next to you. If you don’t know their name or at least a small, simple introduction, you will not feel comfortable

+ | [00:09:51] | ||
+ | |||
+ | I’ve always seen, in the meditation class I tell them: “Close your eyes and tie the ribbon.” When I say close your eyes and tie the ribbon, I’ve always seen people just verify whether others have closed their eyes or not. They look at everybody else instead of they closing their eyes and somebody even makes complaints: “ Swamiji, he has not closed his eyes and he has not closed his eyes.” How do you know that he has not closed his eyes? Because you have not closed, you know that others have not closed. Why it happens? Because you don't feel comfortable if you don’t know the other person. If you know the other person you will feel comfortable. You will start directly closing the eyes instead of looking into the others. What he says or what she does. Instead of looking into the other things you’ll be able to directly meditate.
+ | |||
+ | [00:10:52] | ||
+ | |||
+ | So I request all of you just to introduce your name or you are from where, what you are doing. A few words. Please don’t catch the other and start telling your whole biography. That is one more problem! 😀 I’ve seen some people, they just catch, ‘In 1962, I was in the army ….’ So please go round and introduce yourself. After ten minutes, we’ll start the next session.
+ | Its fifty-third ASP in last one year alone, fifty-third ASP. I tried sometimes to change some of the material. Of course, it is not that all ASP is same. Only meditation techniques are same, otherwise the discourse I change. The material change percent I always change. But how many times I tried to replace this one story with a proper other story. I couldn't get a proper story. This is so potentially meaningful. This story has got so much of meaning in it, I am not able to change this story. Through many sources I tried. Will I get any other story which gives the same potential meaning. I couldn’t get.
+ | |||
+ | [00:12:19] | ||
+ | |||
+ | So let Me give this story and start. It’s actually not even a story, it is a fact which has happened. After the second world war a group of tribal, a group of tribal were living in a forest. Army people, they left their open aircraft in the tribal village. After the war, army people don’t pack up anything and everything and take it away. They leave many things here and there and go away. Just like that, they left their small open aircraft in tribal area in the tribal village. The tribal people, they do not know anything about the aircraft or anything about the outer world. They know only one or two things: the first thing - the trees and few fruits. Next thing - pet animal and wild animal. Pet animals they keep, wild animals they kill, that’s all. Nothing else, they don’t even have an idea that there is something called civilization exists outside their tribal village. Totally secluded tribal people. When they saw something new in their village, they’re not able to grasp, they’re not able to understand what it is. They are not able to realise what it is. They thought something new has come to their city. The whole village gathered and started arguing what it is. What they’ve got something new. Everybody started giving their opinion, this must be that, this must be that, this must be that’.
+ | |||
+ | [00:14:30] | ||
+ | |||
+ | Somebody said, “It may be God which has come down to our village.” Somebody said, “It may be the devil.” But no argument could support with the logic, no argument could stand. Everybody is telling this may be this, this maybe that, that maybe that, but nobody is able to find out what it is really. Finally, one small boy came and told: “ It must be a bullock cart; because bullock cart is also having a wheel, this is also having a wheel, it must be a bullock cart.”
+ | When he gave some logic, when he gave some reason, people all thought: ‘yes it must be a bullock cart. It must be bullock cart.’ So the villagers decided, the whole village decided that we have got a new bullock cart. God has sent new bullock cart for our village. They put a two big bamboo in front of it and put a bullock, started pulling all over the village. It went on for a month.
+ | |||
+ | [00:15:41] | ||
+ | |||
+ | After a month one young boy from the other village, he came to the tribal village. When he came and saw, he also doesn’t know about aircraft, but he knows about tractor. So he thought this must be a tractor. This can not be a bullock cart, this must be a tractor. He started driving and using it as a tractor. And again the whole village declared we have got a bullock cart which can move without bullock, which can go on its own. It went on for one more month.
+ | Third, a man came who is a retired army pilot; pilot from army, who is a retired man. He came to that village for some reason. When he saw what they were doing with that aircraft, he laughed and told them. It’s neither a bullock cart nor a tractor. It's an aircraft. First, they are not ready to understand, they’re not ready to accept but he used it and he showed them how it could fly. Once he showed, the whole village has agreed, whole village has understood what they were using as a bullock cart is not a bullock cart. It is aircraft.
+ | |||
+ | [00:17:19] | ||
+ | |||
+ | Understand this one story, this will give you the total meaning. the total understanding of what you are going to learn for this next two days. Let Me give the inner meaning of this story, what I want to convey through this story.
+ | The body which you have is the vehicle given to you by God. Ninety percent of us, no, ninety-five percent of us, we use the system as a bullock cart. More than ninety-five percent of us will use our system only as a bullock cart. People who just use their system for eating, reproducing, and death. Nothing more than that. You take birth, just grow, get married, earn little bit of money, one or two children and death, over.
+ | If you see your life nothing much is achieved. If you weigh your life it's nothing more than few Benz and few bungalows, that’s all. Few Benz and few bungalows. Nothing more than that. One side you are, one side few Benz and few bungalows that’s all. But that’s not the totality or reality of the life. A man who just uses his system for outer comforts, a little bit of comfort, one or two children and death - the people who use their life, use their body in a minimum way, just for the outer comforts and a little bit of money, one or two children, they use their system as a bullock cart.

[00:01:46]
So, put your whole effort, think everything is for you, not for the next person; nothing is for next person. Everything is told to you. We always think, ‘Swami says. What Is Love || Ananda Spurana || 20 March 2004

Transcript:
(0:14)
You feel you are something special. You are attended, you are cared. You also told a right word. You are cared. Care is what we call love. If somebody gives his attention to you, you say he loves you. If you give your attention to somebody, you say you love him, that’s all. Giving attention or having attention is what is love. When you give your attention, you say you love him. When you receive attention from somebody, you say he loves you. Am I right? Any question? Maimi has not understood.
(01:02)
Devotee: Well, a lot of times, you hear people say, “I care for you but I don’t love you”, especially Americans. Swamiji: Caring and not loving, I don’t think there can be caring without love and I don’t think there is a difference between these two. Devotee: I think it is a different kind of love.
(01:27)
Swamiji: Ha, that’s all but I say general love. Totally love means it is caring. Devotee: The expectations also matter. The expectations with or without expectations. Swamiji: Without expectation it cannot happen. Without expectation only enlightened men can love. I tell you. No, it is a truth. So never, never think that our love is without expectation or something like that.
(01:57)
Devotee: How about depth of expectations. Swamiji: No, even that you see, only two things: expectation or no expectation, that’s all and when a person becomes love, when his whole being becomes love, only then he can do, he can give loving, he can give love without any expectation. Otherwise it is not possible. So let us not bother about expectation or not. That is basic thing, with expectation only. Whether we give or receive, that is the love. Let us understand basically what is love. Then step by step we will go. Yes...something?
(02:41)
Devotee: Love for a place, without any expectation Swamiji: Love for a place? How do you say? You want to be there. Devotee: Not necessarily
(02:51)
Swamiji: Then you don’t have love. You see, the very love you imagine about that place continuously. How can you say I love that place, I don’t want to be there? It is simply your feeling to want to be there only is the love for that place. You see, if you love some place, naturally you want to be there. You would like to stay there. That is the love. Otherwise, how will you say that you are loving that place? When you remember, you feel like you are pulled, you are called. That is what is love. Even place, the love for a place is nothing but with expectation. So you understand first I think Jayashree, you can take the notes later on. How many of this type of courses you attended earlier? Not even one? First course? That is why you are not yet experienced. How many of you have attended any other courses like this? Please you can raise your hands and how many have taken notes at that time, raise the hands and how many of you went back to the house and started seeing once more?
(04:16)
Devotee: I. Swamiji: You are one exemption. Last time also you are the only exemption who raised the hand. Nobody else. 90% you say I suspect you. I don’t believe you even if you say that you go and revise it. I don’t believe you. Devotee: She does, She tells me.
(04:39)
Swamiji: Maybe rarely. I think she has no other work! I have not seen a single person who takes notes and goes back to the house and sees it. No, most of the time, when you go back to the house, we just put that in some cupboard. When you shift your house, you just come up on that notebook and say, “Oh! That Swami from Bengaluru came. Yes, yes. That course notebook.” With respect, put it in the dustbin. So don’t go for notes. Understand, you see, if you take notes, instead of understanding now, you will postpone the understanding. You will think, ‘I will go and study in the house.’ So instead of that, at least understand, you will have notes in your heart. And once you understand, you don’t need to remember it. The idea will remember you.
(05:36)
People ask Me, “Swamiji, should we practice all these teachings in the house?” I tell them, “No, don’t practice. If you have to remember and practice, then what you have understood?” If you really understand, you don’t need to practice. You don’t need to remember them. The teachings will remember you. They will just come up whenever it is necessary. I always tell people, “Try to forget everything.” If it is really worth in your life, you will not be able to forget. Do you forget your name? No. You don’t forget your basic details or basic things about your life. Same way, if it is a basic need, if understanding is a basic thing, you will not be able to forget. If you don’t understand, only then you need to remember. Once this becomes an understanding, you don’t need to remember it. The understanding will remember you.
(06:38)
I again and again tell the people, “If you have really understood, if you really grasp what I say, if you really interact, that is more than enough. Whenever you take something, swallow something without understanding, only then you need to again and again remember. You understand what I say now? Just if you understand, that’s more than enough. You don’t need to remember the teachings. Teachings will remember you. Heart, whenever you are given care, you say you are loved. Whenever you give your attention, you say you are loving. Heart center, the Anahata chakra is related to this attention only. Whenever I say there is a heart center, there is anahata chakra, people will immediately ask Me, “Swamiji, I underwent by-pass surgery. Will it be there as it is?” Whether you underwent by-pass surgery or open heart surgery, the anahata chakra will be there as it is. Don’t bother about it. It will be there as it is. It is not physical. It is more metaphysical. It is more spiritual.
(08:08)
The key for the anahata chakra is whenever you give your attention, the energy center opens. Whenever you ask for the attention of the others, it gets locked. We may say, “When are we asking?” All your fight in the house is nothing but the asking of attention from others, everything. Let us look little deep into the mechanisms of anahata chakra. Actually you feel pampered when you are attended. You feel you are recognised when you are attended. Have you seen the kids? They will be playing in the house. They will throw something-here, there. They will just put few steps forward and then they will wait and see your face whether you recognise it or not. They will just look at your face. If you recognise, if you say okay, they will go ahead. If you just gaze at them, if you show a different face to them, immediately they will sit silently. They will keep quiet.
(09:31)
Devotee: Not all children, Swami. Swamiji: Of course, some they start crying and weeping or anyhow, they just sit or they just wait for your attention, for your recognition. Same way, you also continuously wait for others’ recognition. Whenever you do something, you immediately wait for the others’ certificate. Even if they don’t affect your day-to-day life, even if they are not directly related to your day-to-day life, you wait for others’ certificate. People come and tell Me, “No, no Swamiji, I just do everything as a service. I never expect anything.” If you don’t expect really, if you really don’t expect anything, you will not even expect the good opinion of the others but what all of us do? End of the day, we just wait. For what? Certificate. Good wife, good husband, good son. If you are not given certificate, sometimes you demand also. Most of the time we demand.
(10:52)
Understand little deeply. Every action if you scan your life, every step you can see you are expecting certificate. You are expecting certificate from somebody. From the very young age, you are conditioned to live with good certificates. You are conditioned to aspire for good certificates. In the West, I saw even many houses I saw, they put that good wife, good husband, good parents, actual certificate itself is given. Kids give for parents, husbands give for wives and wives give for husbands. The certificate itself is given. The certificate from the other, the opinion from the other becomes a driving force for us to live. Most of the time if somebody doesn’t gives you the certificate or recognition, if nobody recognizes you, you feel lonely. You feel lonely.
(12:08)
We are continuously afraid of loneliness. Loneliness is more or less like a poison for us. Your ego is alive only when the others exist. You are a good person only in front of so many persons, so many people. If nobody is there, if nobody recognises you, if you are alone, your ego feels hurt because it is not getting pampered. It is not getting boosted. It is just there. Your ego slowly, slowly withers away. If you stay alone in your room, there is nobody to praise you. You cannot feel you are a good person. Only with so many others, you can feel you are a good person. Alone can you feel you are a good person? No, there is no comparison. Your ego doesn’t have a base to say you are a good person. Your ego does not have any support. Only in the relationship, ego flourishes. Whether good or bad, it flourishes only in the relationship.
(13:28)
In aloneness, ego never flourishes. That is why, aloneness is very killing. We are always afraid of aloneness. Aloneness means we feel frightened. We continuously work only for certificates, only for others' signature. Our life is nothing but a long signature campaign. We have a big notebook. In that we have written good husband, please sign. Good wife, please sign. Good son, please sign. Our life is nothing but the long signature campaign. You just expect signature from everyone.
