July 27 20082008-07-27A photograph of a group of devotees walking single file along a dirt road lined with green trees and bushes under a cloudy sky. In front, a man in white kurta with an orange shawl walks beside a woman in white sari and a white top. Behind them, women in white saris, some with orange shawls and one in lavender, walk in a line toward the background. Everyone is barefoot or in simple footwear, and the scene reads as a devotional procession or walk through the countryside. No one in the scene is clearly identifiable as a person, so no candidate is marked.2008-11-11A large crowd of devotees walks single file along a narrow dirt path through dense green trees and shrubs on a hillside, apparently a girivalam circuit. Many men wear white shirts and white dhotis with orange saffron shawls draped over their shoulders, and several women wear white saris with orange borders and orange shawls. Some devotees hold branches or lean into the foliage on the left, and a low grey stone wall runs along the path. Distant rocky slopes and a pale sky are visible at the upper right, and a few people at the edge hold or face the procession.2008-08-03A photograph of a large group of devotees walking single file along a shaded dirt path through dense green trees and leafy undergrowth. A woman in a white sari with a red bindi carries a brown handbag, and an older woman in white gestures toward the trees. A bald-headed older man in white and orange stands near the front, and an out-of-focus person in a grey-striped shirt with an orange shawl occupies the right foreground. Stone steps and a small pipe are visible at lower left.2008-08-03A photograph of a group walking along a dirt path through dense green trees at dusk, on the route around Arunachala Hill. Roughly twenty-five people in white and cream clothing, mostly women in white saris and men in white dhotis or shirts, walk in a loose line with some wearing red or orange shawls. At the right foreground, two figures in saffron-orange robes walk ahead, one wearing an orange shawl and one in full orange sannyasi-style clothing, with a red-orange cloth draped over the shoulder. The background shows thick foliage and scrubby trees.2009-08-05A photograph of a long line of devotees walking along a dirt path beside a low concrete wall and thatched shed, with green trees overhead. Most wear white clothes with orange shawls draped over their shoulders; several women wear white saris with gold borders. A woman in the foreground, seen from behind, has her hair in a bun with a white flower. A man at right with a moustache smiles, and others walk in procession. Cooking pots are visible at left by the shed. The crowd is in a single file of more than twenty visible people.2008-08-03A long line of devotees walks single file along a red dirt path through a dense grove of tall palm trees and leafy shrubs. Most wear white: the women in cream and white saris with gold borders, the men in white shirts and dhotis, and several children in white with rudraksha-style beads. A girl in the foreground wears a red-and-white tie-dyed top over white. Two older women at the right wear cream saris and one wears a blue shawl. Overhead power lines run through the trees.2006-10-08A photograph of a procession walking along a dirt path lined with palm trees and shrubs. Many devotees follow in a long line. In the foreground a man in a white dhoti and kurta wears an orange shawl draped over his shoulders and walks with a steady stride. Beside him a woman in a white kurta and white dhoti-style skirt wears a mala necklace, and to the right a woman in a cream and pink sari with an orange scarf walks with a pendant necklace. Behind them more devotees in white clothes and orange shawls follow along the path, one wearing a white sun hat, with a figure in a green sari among them. The scene suggests a procession or pilgrimage walk toward a temple site.2008-11-11A large outdoor procession moves along a dusty dirt path lined with trees and tall grass. Ornate orange and red palanquin-style canopies with decorative tassels and an orange flag with a blue emblem are carried above the crowd. Strings of small lights hang overhead between trees.
