Night photo of a group walking barefoot up stone steps at a temple entrance in Tamil Nadu. In the centre, a man in a saffron-orange dhoti and shawl with a matching orange turban and rudraksha mala walks beside an older man in an ornate orange robe with a gold-bordered cloth and a large bead necklace. Behind them, devotees in white dhotis and saris follow. On the right, a shaved-headed priest in a white dhoti with a gold border and sacred ash marks on his forehead stands with arms folded. Dark sky, a covered walkway, and signboards with Tamil text frame the scene; a temple gateway lies behind.2011-09-09April 05 20122012-04-05Photograph of a procession descending a stone staircase from a carved temple gateway at dusk or night, lit by a single lamp inside the doorway. Carved relief panels of figures line the upper wall and gopuram-style masonry. A central man in saffron-orange robes with a long orange shawl, a gold beaded necklace and a sandalwood or tilak mark on his forehead walks forward smiling with hands near his body. Around him, men in white dhotis and shirts wear orange shawls, some in saffron robes, and a few carry no visible objects. Stone nandi-style guardian sculptures flank the steps. Whether the central figure is a person cannot be established from appearance alone; the page marks him as present, so the appearance-based candidate is described as a person in saffron with ornate gold necklace and shawl.2008-08-02Night procession of devotees walking barefoot along a stone-paved temple path beside carved granite pillars and walls, lit by a green-white street lamp. Men in white dhotis and orange shawls lead, some in saffron robes and rudraksha malas. A woman in an orange shawl walks at right, another in a maroon sari behind.
