A central man wears a saffron-orange turban, saffron robe, a long gold-beaded necklace and rudraksha-style mala, holding a brass vessel, with a hand-held orange umbrella overhead and a gold palanquin canopy at left. Around him, devotees in saffron, white and pink garments press close; several bare-chested men wear rudraksha malas and ochre cloth, and some people raise folded hands in namaste. Many umbrellas and red flags fill the crowd beside the water. The swami identification cannot be confirmed from appearance; the group reads as a sannyasi-led ritual procession.2016-04-24April 29 20142014-04-29Night scene on a riverbank ghat. In the foreground, a figure in red robes with an orange shawl sits cross-legged on a striped blanket laid over a green-and-white boat seat, hands resting in the lap and eyes lowered, with a tilak on the forehead and beaded necklaces. To the right, a shaved-headed man in red and saffron ochre robes with a rudraksha mala stands looking toward the river. A man in a saffron-orange turban and orange robe, with a long gold-and-bead necklace, stands in the foreground with palms pressed together, while a woman in an orange sari with a beaded necklace and a man in an orange robe nearby also join their hands. Two men in white kurta-style clothing with pink-red cloth draped on their shoulders and wrists in red and gold threads face them, a bare-chested man wears a rudraksha mala, and orange and red umbrellas and saffron flags line the water's edge with many devotees raising hands behind them.2016-04-24Night photograph of a dense crowd of naked or semi-naked ascetics, sadhus and pilgrims packed on a riverbank at the Kumbh Mela, under warm orange-lit sky. Many have ash-smeared bodies, long matted hair and beards, and some wear rudraksha or flower garlands; a man in the foreground near the centre wears an orange garland and has long dreadlocked hair. Tall bamboo poles and staves rise through the crowd, with a row of bright torches or lamps along the far bank and a boat-like structure at left. Several people wear yellow and orange cloth. The scene conveys the Maha Snan ritual bathing gathering on the Ganga.2013-02-10February 13 20132013-02-13September 15 20152015-09-15 +1 copies
