Beneath it stands a decorated structure with garlands and yellow ornaments at its base. A large crowd of men and some women in white dhotis, kurtas and sarees, several with saffron-orange shawls, gathers closely around the base, looking upward. A man in white holds a drum, and a brass lamp is visible near the crowd. Strings of small flags line the background.2007-01-01A procession moves down a dirt road in an ashram setting. Bare-chested drummers in white dhotis beat large drums while men in white shirts and dhotis walk alongside. Several carriers hold brass trays of fruit and offerings, and many people in white stand along both sides. Saffron-orange flags on poles rise above the crowd, along with decorated palanquin-style umbrellas. On the left, a man with a red-orange headband and a rudraksha mala gestures with an outstretched arm, while a man on the right wears a red-orange headband and a rudraksha mala. Trees, a tin-roofed building and a utility pole sit in the background under an overcast sky.2008-07-17A photograph of a festival procession moving along a dirt road lined with palm trees under a bright sky. Drummers in the foreground play large barrel drums; one wears a yellow shirt and one a striped shirt, and a man in a striped shirt and white dhoti plays a drum. Behind them, men and women in white dhotis and white garments, some with red or orange shawls, walk beside colourful ornamental parasols and a white canopy carried on poles. Many orange and red flags wave above the crowd. A man in a white shirt holds a brass pot with flowers and fruit, and another carries a wind instrument. Several people in saffron-orange robes walk near the front. Huts and greenery frame the scene.2009-06-09December 30th 20072007-12-30 +1 copiesDecember 29 20092009-12-29December 30 20072007-12-30Outdoor festival procession at dusk with low sun flaring at left. Musicians in white dhotis and shirts lead the crowd: a drummer on the left and foreground carries a dark-shelled drum, a man in the centre plays a long brass horn (nadaswaram-style), and another drummer at right beats a drum with woven straps. A tall, multi-tiered chariot or palanquin (ratha/vahana) draped in bright red, orange, blue and yellow fabric with mirrored tassels stands behind them, with a small deity murti visible inside. Large embroidered banners and matching umbrellas with tasselled edges flank the procession, and palm trees and a red-brown wall line the path. A brass finial and flag-like ornament top the right side. Several dozen people in white, orange and a few coloured saris walk behind.2010-12-26
