May 29 20122012-05-29A dense crowd fills a stone temple corridor with carved pillars and ornate ceiling brackets, lit by overhead tube lights. Most people are men, many bare-chested with white or ochre cloths, some wearing rudraksha or beaded necklaces; a few wear yellow and white clothing. Painted devotional banners hang from the pillars, and glass-covered deity shrines or offering enclosures line the far side. The image shows a packed temple procession or darshan line rather than a single identifiable ritual.2018-04-29May 07 20122012-05-07A photograph of a crowded covered colonnade inside a temple complex, with carved white stone pillars and a low ceiling. Shops line both sides, selling garlands, religious pictures, bags and trinkets under hanging marigold strings. Many men and women walk through the narrow aisle; several men in white dhotis and shirts stand near the centre, one wearing a yellow-and-white garland around his neck, and an elderly man with white hair stands at the right edge. Signboards in Tamil script hang overhead.2007-08-17July 28 20082008-07-28May 07 20122012-05-07April 29 20182018-04-29Night photograph inside a temple hall lined with stone pillars, a blue sign reading திருச்சுற்று மண்டபம் above the entrance. A dense crowd of devotees moves forward, many men wearing orange and saffron dhotis or shirts with rudraksha and flower garlands. Uniformed police in khaki stand among them, and a man in a green sports shirt walks in front. Festive lights and garlands decorate the hall, and a screen shows the temple in the background. No individual is identifiable as a person from visible cues in this frame.2017-02-06Interior of a stone temple hall with carved pillars, painted ceiling panels and a tall brass lamp stand at centre. A man in a bright orange turban and orange shawl with a red flower garland stands by a dark stone platform holding a bowl and offering, with a white cloth-draped sivalinga-style object before him. Around him stand devotees in white and saffron clothes, a bare-chested young man with a sacred thread, a woman in red and a woman in yellow. A red banner with ritual symbols hangs on the wall behind. Visitors crowd the aisles, and a blue railing is visible at the right edge.2007-08-17Interior corridor of a South Indian temple with ornately carved dark stone pillars topped by painted brackets and mythical lion-headed figures, and a colourful concentric circular painted ceiling in pink, yellow, green and blue. Several people walk along the stone floor, including a man in white dhoti and shirt and others in saffron and orange saris, while two women in orange and yellow sit near a metal barrier at the left. A painted green and red serpent figure stands on a pillar at left. Warm lamp light fills the long aisle.2012-05-10A photograph of a long, dimly lit temple corridor lined with white-painted pillars with carved capitals and a ribbed ceiling. Shops line both sides, with stalls selling garlands, colourful strings of marigold flowers, small brass items and religious pictures hung on the pillars. Several people in white shirts, a woman in a pink top, and women in sarees walk along the passage, some browsing the stalls. Signboards in Tamil hang from the pillars, including a green-bordered sign with Tamil script and a blue sign advertising milk products.2007-08-17May 10 20122012-05-10
