March 22 20082008-03-22March 22 20082008-03-22A crowded outdoor Holi celebration among coconut palms, with many children and adults gathered on bare sandy ground. Many people wear white kurtas or dhotis, some with orange or saffron shawls over their shoulders, and several have faces and clothes splashed with pink, purple and yellow powdered colour. Children in bright shirts, including a yellow top and red trousers, hold small yellow squeeze bottles and colour packets. Coloured balloons in pink, red, green and blue are tied to tall poles at left, and a copper-coloured ornamental pillar stands at right. The mood is a festive crowd playing with colours.2008-03-22Outdoor photograph of a dusty open ground at an ashram-style campus, with a metal frame holding a small hanging red-and-yellow vessel with flower garlands from a rope. Several people in white traditional dhoti-style clothing with gold borders stand around, including a bare-chested man in the foreground and women in white saris. Blue plastic drums and a green bucket sit on the ground. A man in a white shirt and dark vest stands near the frame, one arm raised. Red-roofed buildings, trees, parked cars and a red van are in the background under a hazy sky.2011-12-13February 23 20082008-02-23 +1 copiesMarch 22 20082008-03-22Outdoor photograph on bare dirt ground with puddled water. A figure with long dark hair and bare upper body, wearing an orange dhoti, stands at left holding a rope that runs up to a wooden frame with a hanging clay pot. Behind the frame, a crowd of about fifty people stands watching, including men in orange shirts and white dhotis and women in white and pink. Tall trees and a blue metal scaffold frame the background under a pale sky. A man in an orange shirt and white pants at centre holds an orange-wrapped stick near the pole. The clay pot hanging from the wooden pole suggests a pot-breaking game, a common festival activity.2006-12-25Outdoor scene on wet, sandy ground under a grey overcast sky. A tall metal frame at left holds a rope with a small clay pot hanging from it, and a long white rope runs diagonally across the frame. A woman in a saffron-orange sari and a man in saffron-orange robes stand at right, the woman holding the rope. Around them a crowd of devotees in white clothes, some in light blue, grey and green, stands near blue plastic drums and a small child in a green dress. Trees and a terracotta-coloured boundary wall sit in the background.2010-09-02March 22 20082008-03-22Outdoor photo on dry dirt ground beside a shallow puddle. In the foreground a bare-chested man with long dark hair wears an orange-saffron dhoti and holds a long rope, pointing toward a wooden frame. A clay pot hangs from a crossbar on tall wooden posts. Beside it a man in an orange shirt and white dhoti stands with a long orange cloth. Behind them a large crowd of about forty men in white, orange and dark clothes stands watching under a pale sky with trees and a metal scaffold at the left edge.2006-12-25Outdoor photo of a Janmashtami-style pot-breaking game on a dusty open ground. A metal frame holds a hanging clay pot overhead, with a rope dangling from it. Two monks in saffron-orange robes stand near blue barrels, one reaching up toward the suspended pot. Children in bright clothes, including a girl in yellow and red and another in pink, run and play nearby. Behind them a crowd of people in white and colourful garments watches from a brick wall with trees beyond. Water droplets are visible in the air.2010-09-02Night outdoor photo of a children's game at an ashram ground. A tall wooden frame is strung with a dangling rope rigged with decorative clay pots, while balloons, tinsel and garlands of red, pink and yellow hang from the poles. A figure in an orange-saffron robe stands in the centre near the swinging pots, facing the rig. Around them, many children in school clothes crowd the open ground, and adults in white dhotis and white shirts, some with orange shawls, stand to the right. Electric lights and palm trees are visible in the dark background.2006-11-14
