A man in a white short-sleeved shirt and grey trousers pushes burning logs with a long red-handled tool, while another man in a white shirt and dark trousers stands holding a long-handled shovel, wearing a beaded necklace. Behind, a person in white dhoti and white shirt with a yellow cloth over the shoulder bends over a small circular space. Rows of small stone deity murtis and a white building with a tin roof stand in the background.2010-07-11July 11 20102010-07-11Outdoors on a bare reddish-brown earth clearing ringed by palm trees, a large wood fire burns in the foreground with tall orange flames and smoke rising. Three men in plain white ritual clothing tend the fire: one in the left-center holds a long-handled tool, another beside him in white bends over the fire, and a third man in white stands at the far right edge. Several shallow circular ground patterns surround the fire area, and a utility pole and low wall appear in the background. Fire pits with offerings like this may be a homa or yagna, but no ritual is visible in detail. No candidate for a person is visibly identifiable among the people.2006-08-18November 14 20052005-11-14Outdoor photo of a large open-air fire pit burning wood logs on a sandy ground, with smoke rising. Around it are several circular fire pits or ring-shaped markings in the sand. Three men in white clothes stand nearby; the nearest, in a white shirt and white pants, bends forward holding a red-handled tool, while two others in white garments with cloth around their necks handle long poles and a shovel. A water tank on a metal stand, tall trees and a red-and-white striped wall sit in the background under a cloudy sky. The scene suggests a homa or yagna fire ritual.2006-08-18A man in a white shirt and white dhoti bends over a large outdoor fire on bare sandy ground, using a long-handled metal implement to stir or tend the burning logs and embers. Smoke rises and flames flicker among charred wood, with green trees and a pole in the background. This appears to be a homa or fire ritual being tended by a single participant.2006-08-18November 14 20052005-11-14An outdoor cremation pyre of stacked wooden logs burns on a brick base on reddish earth, with smoke rising and yellow flower petals scattered on the ground in front. Two men in white dhoti and kurta stand at the pyre; the taller one at left holds a wooden stick, and the other stands beside a bundle of wood. A saffron-robed sannyasi in orange cloth kneels at the pyre's edge tending the fire, and a second saffron-robed figure stands behind it. Around two dozen seated men in white and light shirts sit on grass to the left, with vehicles parked and a hill behind.2005-11-14November 14 20052005-11-14
