A street scene in a Tamil Nadu town, seen past a large gold-coloured sculpted hand in the foreground with raised fingers marked with horizontal lines, possibly a deity's abhaya mudra hand on a procession ratha. An orange flag is attached to the ratha pole at left. Beside it a young man with white vibhuti marks on his forehead and an orange cloth over his shoulder looks down. Traffic moves along the road: motorcycles, an auto-rickshaw, a truck loaded with goods, and a few pedestrians in white. Shop signs and trees line the street.

Behind it, a crowd of devotees in white dhotis and saris and colourful clothing gathers on a grassy compound before a stone shrine gateway and pink-walled buildings. A red flag on a pole stands at left, and a brass vessel with a bright oil lamp flame sits on a table at right beside offerings. The statue appears to be a deity or murti hand, not a living person.2006-10-20Photograph taken from a procession vehicle during a street procession in an Indian town.
