A photograph on a river at Varanasi showing two young men in the foreground pushing and steadying a weathered wooden riverboat with blue and white diagonal stripes and peeling red paint. Behind them, a white and blue passenger boat with a red-trimmed cabin and railing carries a few people, including a man in white clothing and a man in saffron robes standing near a speaker stand. A pale hazy sky and a distant red-girdered bridge frame the scene.

On the right, a white-and-red boat carries several people in saffron and orange robes and white clothing; one saffron-robed man stands at the rail pointing toward the water, and a man in a grey t-shirt stands in the foreground. A cameraman appears at the right edge. On the left, a blue-and-white striped boat carries passengers in mixed clothing, including a woman in a red sari, and a man leans from its side. A man in a rust-red dhoti and a rudraksha-style beaded necklace stands waist-deep in the water, holding the arm of a shaven-headed man in white ritual clothes and a beaded necklace who is being guided into the river; a third man in a white cloth kneels in the water to support him. Behind them, a crowd of people in white and orange-saffron garments stands on the steps and in boats decorated with marigold garlands, with a boat painted with the word SHAH partly visible at the upper right. Murky green-brown river water fills the foreground. Five or more people are visible on the ghat, and the riverbank crowd is large.2013-02-13 +2 copies
