November 12 20082008-11-12November 12 20082008-11-12Outdoor ground ceremony on bare earth beside a rocky, tree-covered hill. A long-haired figure in a saffron-orange wrap stands at right with palms pressed together, holding a long thin stick, and a second person in orange stands at far right. Visible cues include long swept-back hair and saffron clothing, so this matches the Swamiji (probable) appearance profile, and the figure is shown as a ceremony leader. Before them is a brick-lined pit of earth with flower garlands, a green coconut, a brass oil lamp, a brass kalasha-style pot, leafy twigs and offering plates with fruit and sweets. A man in white on the left and a seated row of devotees in white clothes, some with orange cloth, sit on mats with hands folded in prayer. Dirt heaped at left suggests a ground-breaking rite, a bhoomi puja.2008-11-12Outdoor bhoomi puja at a rocky, tree-lined site under a decorated canopy with colourful fringed valance. A long-haired figure in orange robes and a red-orange garment with rudraksha mala stands with palms joined at the centre, facing a square brick-and-flower-lined pit where a young sapling is planted beside a kalasha-like pot and a small pitcher. Around them, men in white dhotis and shirts and saffron-robed men and women stand or kneel with palms folded; a bearded man in orange robes stands at right. Trays of flowers, fruit, sweets, coconuts and a brass lamp lie on cloths on the ground, and an orange-clad attendant holds a yellow flag at right. Mounded red earth lies in the foreground beside a stone slab.2008-11-12November 12 20082008-11-12November 12 20082008-11-12Outdoor photo of a bhoomi pooja at a square stone-block foundation on bare earth. A central figure in saffron-orange robes with a long flowing dark hair and a multicoloured flower garland stands at the centre, arms spread over a raised metal stand and a lit brass lamp; the ground is strewn with pink and red petals. Around the pit, saffron-robed priests and white-clad devotees stand; a priest on the right holds a tray of flowers and another priest on the far right holds a small lamp. Brass kalasha pots sit at the corners, and a crowd of spectators fills the background beside a stage and tent structure.2009-07-08 +1 copiesOutdoor ground-breaking or bhoomi puja at a construction site. A central figure with long dark hair wears an orange robe, a red-and-white flower garland, and holds a tall iron rod or stake upright in a square pit of sand scattered with red and pink rose petals. Two attendants in orange robes at right, one holding a silver tray of pink petals, kneel beside a small oil lamp and brass vessels. Around the pit are kalasha-like brass pots with mango leaves. A large crowd of men and women in white and yellow stands behind, many raising hands in greeting. Concrete blocks frame the pit, and a flag hangs at left.2009-07-08 +1 copiesA photograph of an outdoor ground-breaking or bhoomi puja at dusk. A central figure in a saffron-orange robe and orange turban, wearing a multicolour flower garland, stands before a small wooden post on bare earth, with yellow flower petals, marigold and jasmine scattered on the ground and small oil lamps or cups set out. Behind him, a seated and standing crowd of men and women in white dhotis, white shirts and white sarees with gold borders stand with palms pressed together in namaskar. A man in white holds a plate of offerings, a woman in a cream saree with gold border bows with hands folded at left, and a striped tent canopy and cloudy sky frame the scene. The setting is an open field.2007-08-17 +2 copiesNovember 12 20082008-11-12Outdoor ritual at the Kanchipuram ashram land inauguration: a central figure in saffron-orange robes with an orange head wrap, long dark hair, and a garland of white and yellow flowers holds a small lit flame over a pit in the ground, with a yellow-flowered garland at his feet.
