September 08 20152015-09-08A photograph of a figure seen from behind and to the side, wearing a red-orange dhoti-style garment with yellow bands across the chest and waist, and a long garland of yellow and red flowers draped over the shoulders. The figure reaches toward the massive trunk of a banyan tree whose many aerial roots and hanging prop roots form a dense curtain around a dark hollow at the base. Stone steps and a low stone platform are visible at left, with a blue-covered object at the lower edge. The person's hair is pinned up in a bun. The figure's face is not clearly visible, so the appearance cue for the a person label is insufficient and the figure is described by role as a devotee performing a tree-side ritual.2015-09-08Outdoor photo beneath a large old banyan tree with thick aerial roots and a marigold garland wrapped around its trunk. A sign reading DO NOT ENTER THE CAVE hangs near the base. A standing figure in long flowing orange robes and a crown-like headpiece holds a small lamp or flame toward the shrine, with long dark hair swept back. Beside him, two attendants in orange and white clothing hold a brass tray or plate. Ahead, a black-tiled courtyard leads to a white arched doorway, a shrine area decorated with red flowers and orange cloth, and a rangoli-style patterned floor. The scene suggests an arati or puja at a sacred tree shrine.2010-12-27December 03 20162016-12-03December 03 20162016-12-03 +1 copiesA photograph of a man in saffron-orange robes standing with his hands clasped before him at a banyan tree shrine. Aerial roots hang and spread from the massive trunk, which shelters a dark recess at its base. Low stone platforms and a dark tiled walkway surround the tree in dappled sunlight. He wears a dark rudraksha mala and a reddish-maroon border on his garment. A small blue plaque on the stone platform reads a short inscription. Swamiji (probable) is a man with long swept-back dark hair, saffron clothing and rudraksha beads, standing in reverent posture.2011-03-05December 03 20162016-12-03Outdoor ritual beneath a large banyan tree with dense aerial roots and hanging branches. A man in white dhoti and loose white top holds a lit lamp or flame aloft toward the tree, with a small brass bell in his other hand. Beside him stand two men in saffron-orange robes and rudraksha-style beaded necklaces, and at the right edge another man in white with a garland. A 'DO NOT ENTER THE CAVE' blue sign hangs near the tree base. Behind them lies a red flower-covered mound beside a marble-edged platform and a decorated arch, with dark polished stone paving in the foreground.2010-12-21Outdoor photo beneath a large banyan tree with dense aerial roots and a blue sign reading "DO NOT ENTER THE CAVE" with a red garland on the trunk. A long-haired man in a white dhoti and white shawl stands on a dark tiled floor, holding a small lamp or incense vessel from which smoke rises as he offers it. Beside him a man in saffron-orange robes with a rudraksha-style garland holds a plate of offerings, and another man in white with a sacred thread stands at the right edge. Behind them a white arched shrine frame is decorated with red flowers and a kalasha-like arrangement of red offerings on a raised platform. Light from the trees and ground patterns of white kolam designs complete the scene.2010-12-21Outdoor photo at a large banyan tree with aerial roots, decorated with garlands of white jasmine and yellow and purple flowers. A man with long dreadlocked hair, full beard, rudraksha-style neck adornments and gold armband stands in orange-saffron robes on the right, holding a flower garland. Behind him, a man in white dhoti and shawl holds a tray of flowers, and several people in white and orange clothing stand nearby while others photograph the scene. A blue sign reads 'Do Not Enter the Cave' near a colourful rangoli of flower petals on the ground. The setting suggests a temple ritual at the tree.2016-12-23December 14 20162016-12-14December 23 20162016-12-23 +2 copies
