June 12 20042004-06-12June 12 20042004-06-12A photograph of an outdoor homa fire ritual in a courtyard with a plain whitewashed wall behind. A white-clad priest in a white dhoti and shawl with a yellow sacred thread, a tilak on his forehead and a rudraksha-style mala, sits before a raised ritual altar of brick-like blocks decorated with flower petals and yellow turmeric marks, pouring ghee from a bowl into the altar with a ladle while speaking into a microphone on a stand. Two men in white shirts sit with folded hands, a man in a dark shirt sits behind, and an older man in white with folded hands sits at left. Heaps of wood and offerings lie at left, an orange cloth bundle sits on the mat, and banana leaves, flower garlands, brass plates, kalasha pots and a blue cloth cover the right side.A photograph of a puja ceremony seated on a mat before a low brick-walled square structure with small lit lamps along its rim and sand inside. A bare-chested priest with a white tilak and an orange shawl over his shoulder sits at the centre, his hand reaching toward the brick enclosure. Beside him a bearded man with a white tilak and a bare chest holds a stick toward the ritual. An older man in a white dhoti and white top with a rudraksha mala sits at the right, holding a bundle of thin sticks over a brass plate of pink flowers, bananas and brass bowls. A woman in a green sari and a younger woman in white stand nearby, and many seated devotees in white clothes and grey shirts fill the background.2004-06-12July 06 20152015-07-06June 12 20042004-06-12September 30 20072007-09-30July 11 20142014-07-11December 26 20062006-12-26A photograph of a homa at a yellow-brick fire pit, with a bright flame rising from the burning wood. A man in a saffron-orange robe and matching orange head wrap, seated at left, holds a ladle over the fire and speaks into a microphone on a stand. Beside him, seated devotees in white ritual clothes press their palms together or hold incense sticks, and a brass vessel of ghee and small oil lamps sit near the pit. Behind them, a large brass lamp stand and a dark-framed metal artwork hang on the wall, with rows of seated devotees in white and a woman in yellow sari at right. Ritual performed with a fire pit and offerings, consistent with a homa. Appearance-based cues: saffron robe and orange head wrap, but not enough for a confident identity; the figure is labelled only as the officiating priest leading the homa.2004-07-02Night photograph of a large outdoor homa gathering on bare ground. In the foreground a man in a cream kurta and dhoti sits cross-legged with palms pressed together in namaste before a small brick fire pit with a bright flame. A brass bowl sits beside him. Behind him rows of seated participants in white shirts and white dhotis, and women in sarees, sit at similar brick fire pits, several with flames and small oil lamps. Smoke hangs in the air. Participants wear name badges. The scene is a fire ritual, homa or yagna.2007-11-18A seated group performs a homa beside a brick fire pit with a visible flame, with offerings of fruit, green leaves, and bowls on a cloth. A man in white with a garland of white and red flowers presses his palms together at the front left. Beside him a woman in an orange sari holds a small child in teal. Near the centre a man in a green shirt and white dhoti sits with palms joined, and a woman in white with glasses and a garland sits nearby. At front right a man in white garland and cloth reads or sits beside a brass vessel. Behind them musicians play wind instruments and a drum, and a crowd of devotees in saffron and white sits in a room with an orange wall and a framed painting of a seated figure. Eleven or more people are visible.2011-11-06
