January 01 20082008-01-01Evening ritual in a whitewashed hall under tube lights. A standing man in white dhoti and kurta with a saffron-orange shawl holds a brass lamp stand with multiple lit oil lamps, and other white-clad men with orange shawls stand in a row beside him. In the foreground a seated man in white with an orange shawl kneels before a brass lamp and burning flame, and a young boy in white draped cloth tends another lit lamp. Several more people in white and orange sit along the back wall. A hanging decorative tassel and a small framed picture are on the wall. A standing figure in an orange robe, hair pulled back, holds up a brass aarti lamp with a tall, multi-tiered cluster of lit oil lamps. Seated devotees in white clothes, several with hands folded in prayer, sit on the ground in the left foreground, with one wearing a red shawl. On the right, a floor mat holds a brass plate of fruit, small brass vessels and a kalasha-like object. A white-draped table or seat sits behind the lamp-holder. The background is dark with a hanging dried plant fibre overhead. The lamp and offerings suggest an aarti at a gathering.2005-12-15
