Two workmen carve a wooden vahana, a white-painted animal sculpture with green detailing, mounted on a low wooden workbench outdoors under a tree. The man on the left, in a green checked lungi and white sleeveless vest, leans over the carving with both hands while the man on the right, in a white vest with a thin cord necklace, works with tools beside him. Scattered wood shavings, a plastic bag, paint cans and chisels surround the bench, with a paved road and a passing motorcycle in the background.A man with grey hair and glasses sits cross-legged on a wooden workbench, wearing a white shirt and a yellow dhoti, working on a flat piece of wood with his bare foot pressed to the surface while his hands hold a tool. Behind him stands a large metal plate with an embossed floral design and a paper pattern taped to it. A sheet of yellow cloth lies on the bench beside a metal straight edge. Other people and wooden panels and carved pieces are visible in the sandy background, along with a blue water drum. The figure is an ordinary craftsman and the appearance does not support identifying him as a person.2009-12-19A craftsman sits cross-legged on a wooden board in an open workshop, working on a gold-coloured repoussé panel with a small chisel. He wears a striped white, purple and beige short-sleeved shirt, white shorts with green trim, and a gold bangle on his wrist. Around him lie metal tools and an ornate golden arched frame with floral scrollwork, and a dark pitch-like base covers the work surface. The setting is a sheltered, open-sided workshop with corrugated walls. No a person candidate is visible.2013-07-16 +1 copiesJuly 16 20132013-07-16 +1 copiesPhoto of two young men working outdoors under a shaded roof beside a road, carving a large wooden lion-like vahana with a curled tail. The man on the right, in a white sleeveless vest and grey trousers with a wristwatch, rests his arm on the carving and holds a tool. The man on the left, in a white vest and green checked lungi, stands beside the carving. A wooden workbench in front holds chisels and tools, and wood shavings lie on the ground. A green-painted section of the carved figure is visible, with a stone wall and gate behind. Two carved lion vahana sculptures stand on wooden carrying platforms outdoors at a workshop. The left lion is unpainted white-washed wood with a curled tail and open mouth; the right lion is partly finished, with green paint on its mane and fur and metal ring fittings on the wooden platform. Carving tools, a wrench and wood shavings lie on the ground and platform. A road and a white boundary wall are visible behind. No people are present.June 17 20132013-06-17September 18 20062006-09-18July 01 20132013-07-01December 21 20092009-12-21A photograph of a workshop at night where a man in a striped shirt and checked lungi bends over a large, dusty grey sculpted figure lying on a concrete floor. He operates a handheld angle grinder against the sculpture, which has a carved, ornate surface with a raised animal-like form at the top left. A small fire glows in the background, and a bundled cloth and lattice wall are visible.Outdoor stone-carving workshop among many unfinished white and grey granite sculptures, including elephant and lion-like forms and carved pillars. In the foreground, an older man with white beard and head wrapped in a peach-coloured cloth, wearing a peach t-shirt and peach waist cloth, crouches while grinding a granite block with a handheld angle grinder. Behind him, a younger man in a white t-shirt and lavender shorts sits and strikes a stone with a hammer and chisel. A standing figure in a pink top is partly visible at the upper right. Dark granite panels with carved relief lie at the left edge.
