Exterior view of the Tiruchendur Subramaniya Swami temple gopuram and ornate white stone facade, its tiers crowded with sculpted deities and figures against a pale sky. A photograph of the gopuram-side entrance of a South Indian temple, its tiered upper walls crowded with painted deity and figure sculptures. Strings of yellow, orange, pink and white marigold garlands hang along the front facade beneath small round lamps. Several dozen devotees and passersby, mostly in white shirts, dhotis, sarees and salwars, mill about the courtyard steps. An orange-robed figure stands near the center, and a uniformed guard appears at right beside a woman in a maroon saree. A man in a white shirt on the left and an elderly man seated on the steps add to the scene, with a blue tarpaulin and a metal lantern-style lamp at right.

A crowd of devotees descends a stone staircase at a South Indian temple entrance with a white gopuram covered in sculpted figures behind it. Men in white dhotis and white kurtas, many wearing rudraksha-style beaded necklaces, walk down the steps. Several figures in saffron and orange robes move in the middle of the group, and a man in an orange shawl stands near the top. A uniformed police officer in khaki stands at the right edge, and a yellow gate and carved stone pillars frame the left side. A large poster hangs on the gopuram wall above the gateway.

A man in a white shirt and light trousers climbs the steps toward the doorway. In the foreground, a man in white with grey hair stands with his back to the camera. To the right, a figure in an orange-saffron robe with long hair stands beside a man in white holding a cloth bag, and another bearded man in orange wrap stands at right, with several other people in white shirts nearby. A small niche carving of a deity murti is set into the wall on the right.

August 01 2009 - Kalpataru, Thiruvanaikaval, India

A group of about a dozen people walks across a paved courtyard toward a tall, ornately carved gopuram tower of a South Indian temple, its tiers covered in sculpted figures. Most walkers wear white dhotis and shirts; a few women wear white saris and a man in front wears an orange-saffron dhoti. A bare-headed man in orange-saffron robes walks at the front right, and an elderly man in saffron wraps stands at right beside a low tiled-roof building with white walls. Clear blue sky and a utility line overhead.
