A barefoot man in an orange saffron dhoti and shawl with gold borders stands on a raised platform beside a tall copper flagstaff, pulling an orange cord wrapped around the pole with both hands. A dark rudraksha mala hangs at his chest and a red mark is on his forehead. Behind him a second man in white ritual cloth stands near the ornately carved copper base, which shows a relief of a tree and decorative bands. Tall palm trees and greenery fill the background. The man pulling the cord is the only clearly visible saffron-clad figure; no appearance-based candidate qualifies beyond a generic sannyasi.2011-09-02November 06 20102010-11-06Outdoor photo of a copper flagpole with a carved copper base set on a white plinth, its shaft wrapped with rope and decorated with marigold and red flower garlands. A man in saffron-orange robes stands at right, one arm raised to the rope, guiding it up the pole, with palm trees and a pale sky behind. Two men in saffron-orange robes stand on the base; one raises his arm to hold a rope tied to the pole while the other, bare-headed in orange cloth, steadies it with both hands. Palm trees and a grey sky surround the site. At the lower right, white-clad devotees with saffron shawls and rudraksha stand watching, one holding what appears to be a pooja tray. A yellow banner with dark lettering sits at the left edge. The scene suggests a flag-raising or pole-erection ceremony.2010-11-06November 06 20102010-11-06Outdoor photograph of a flag-hoisting ceremony beneath coconut palms in bright daylight.
