Outdoor ritual gathering at dusk with many seated participants in rows before small brick fire pits (homa/yagna) on bare ground, with flower petals, marigold garlands and offering plates placed around the pits. In the foreground an elderly bearded sadhu with long white hair sits cross-legged in saffron-orange dhoti, a white shawl over his shoulder and a rudraksha mala around his neck, looking toward the camera. Behind him a boy in a striped shirt and women in green, yellow and white saris also sit at fire pits, and a large crowd fills the background under strings of lights and red decorations. Smoke fills the air and small flames burn in many pits. In the foreground a woman in a white sari with a red border sits cross-legged tending a fire, and nearby a woman in a white garment feeds the flames. Further back an older man in white dhoti and shirt sits by a pit, and a shirtless man wears an orange cloth on his lower body. Brass bowls and small offerings sit beside the fires. The crowd of seated participants stretches into the hazy background.2007-11-18Night photograph of a large outdoor homa (fire ritual) at an ashram. A priest seated at the front, with a pink-red turban and bare chest, holds a long ritual implement over a brick fire pit where flames rise, surrounded by offerings of bananas, fruits, flowers and marigold garlands. Many other men in white dhotis, some bare-chested and some in white shirts, stand and sit around the rows of fire pits and offering trays. A steel pail of wooden sticks sits in the foreground. The cluster of men stands at roughly the 21-100 range.2017-03-11Outdoor homa at night: a brick fire pit with a large flame rises in the centre, decorated with pink and red flower petals along its ledges. A bare-chested priest in a green waist cloth and white dhoti, with a green head cloth, pours an offering from a brass bowl into the fire. Beside him a shirtless man in a green dhoti and white cloth sits cross-legged, and at left a shirtless man in white dhoti with an orange-saffron shawl holds a small offering. Brass pots, a bowl of petals and rice sit on the ground at lower left. Behind them, a seated crowd in white clothes with red shawls watches, several with tilak marks.2016-07-04
