In the centre, a man with long, swept-back dark hair and a red tilak on his forehead wears an orange saffron shawl over orange clothing and a heavy necklace of large gold beads, and carries a long wooden staff upright over his shoulder. Behind and around him, many people in orange and saffron clothing walk along the road; a woman in a peach-coloured cap, a man in dark sunglasses and a black jacket with an orange shawl, and an older woman in a grey top are visible. A man in a dark jacket holds a small camera. Hills, a white building with a balcony and a utility pole fill the background. Appearance cues suggest a person in a procession; the identification is uncertain.2006-06-01February 13 20132013-02-13Outdoor procession on a crowded street in a hill town. A central figure in saffron-orange robes and a heavy gold beaded necklace with a pendant walks holding a silver trident, one hand raised in blessing. Behind, devotees in orange shawls and a red-capped man carry brass vessels, and a ceremonial umbrella with tasselled fringe is held overhead. Women in saris and shawls line the route, and a grey umbrella and brass pots sit at lower left. Metal scaffolding and tin-roofed buildings frame the scene.2006-05-30 +1 copies2006 - Glimpses From Varanasi YatraA photograph of a group walking up a stone-paved lane past a pink-washed building with a red ornamental symbol and partial Devanagari lettering. A central man wears a saffron-orange dhoti and shawl with a thick gold-toned beaded necklace, a white tilak on his forehead, and long dark wavy hair; he stands with hands together at his chest. Behind and beside him, men in white kurtas and orange shawls walk and stand; one bald man carries a bundle wrapped in orange cloth and a leopard-print shawl over his shoulder. A white multi-tower temple-like building with pink and white balconies rises behind, with a small blue signboard and a hanging wire overhead. Small figures descend the steps at left.2006 - Glimpses From Varanasi YatraA photograph of a central figure in an orange saffron turban with a round gold ornament at the forehead, wearing orange draped robes and a long rudraksha mala. He stands on a street in front of a building with ornate gold-and-red trim. Beside him, a man in a blue jacket and red sweater holds a leopard-print cloth, and a younger man in a grey jacket wears an orange scarf. A man in a white cap and a parked dark vehicle are behind them.
