The man at right raises a brass lamp with a lit flame and small bells, his other hand in añjali mudra. Beside him a bearded sannyasi with a red tilak holds his palms together in prayer. A second sannyasi with matted locks and rudraksha malas also folds his hands. At left, a sannyasi with a flower-filled brass plate of pink petals looks downward. Their arms bear white painted markings and rudraksha bracelets, and gold-toned pendants hang on their chests. A grey stone figure appears at the right edge. Roles are priests and devotees; no one is identified as a person.2020-06-26Outdoor Dhwajarohanam ritual during the Nithyanandotsavam festival. A bare-chested priest in orange dhoti and shawl, with dreadlocked hair and sandalwood markings on his arms, holds a burning camphor flame aloft. Beside him a second orange-clad priest with rudraksha malas rings a handbell and holds a brass plate of offerings. On the right, two young boys in orange cloth stand holding a silver container and a cloth bundle. A green and pink cloth-wrapped golden pillar with leaves stands at left beside a dark stone carving, with palm trees behind. Smoke and haze fill the morning air.2021-12-19A dark stone Nandi bull statue, draped with garlands of orange and yellow marigolds and a red-and-white flower band, sits in the foreground on a stone base. Behind it rises a tiered red stone stairway lined with black Shivalinga stones. Two shaved-headed men in saffron-orange dhotis stand and sit on the steps in the hazy morning light. The standing man, bare-chested with rudraksha beads, holds a lit oil lamp aloft in one hand and a bell or small ritual object in the other, smoke curling upward, as an aarti is performed. The seated man in orange wears a rudraksha mala and sits beside large brass vessels and a brass kalasha. The setting suggests an outdoor ritual at a temple ghat.2017-02-26
