July 18 20152015-07-18Photo 11715451A bare-chested man in a pink-and-white striped turban and white dhoti sits before a fire pit (homa/yagna) with his eyes lowered and his right hand extended over the flames. He wears a heavy gold bead necklace with a gold pendant, a blue-and-white bead mala and a rudraksha on a yellow cord. Beside him stands a woven bamboo basket, and the fire pit holds rice, flowers and offerings. A golden shimmering backdrop and a blurred person in the foreground frame the scene. Whether this man is a person cannot be established from appearance alone, so he is described by role as a priest performing the fire ritual.2016-09-29November 10 20112011-11-10November 10 20112011-11-10July 28 20172017-07-28 +1 copiesNovember 23 20162016-11-23A close photograph of a homa fire ritual at an outdoor camp setting. A seated person in white ritual dress with a cream-and-gold border ladles liquid from a silver bowl into a fire pit lined with red brick and yellow-marked tiles. The fire is burning wood sticks and ash, with flames rising beside the ladle. Offerings sit nearby: a silver bowl, a steel vessel, a glass jar of pale liquid, and a tray with orange fruit. Pink and yellow flowers decorate the edge of the pit. Another person in white trousers stands at left, and a brass bell appears at upper right.2006-04-01A seated priest in a homa ritual beside a large fire pit built from yellow-painted bricks decorated with purple and white flower patterns. He wears a pink-and-white checked head cloth, a rudraksha mala, a gold-and-red shawl, and a white dhoti, and he is bare-chested. He holds a ritual implement over the flames while smoke rises. Two standing people in white dhotis are at the left edge, and brass pots and a copper vessel sit on a cloth in front of the fire. The scene is an outdoor ritual on a paved floor under a reddish evening light.2017-07-08November 10 20112011-11-10A homa fire ceremony in progress on a patterned striped cloth. A shirtless man in white dhoti with a red and gold head cloth, rudraksha and bead malas, stirs an offering with a wooden ladle over a brick fire pit where flames rise from logs. Coconuts, bananas, marigold and red flowers, and a brass kalasha with mango leaves and a coconut form the offerings beside him. A second man in white sits at the right edge. Behind, a red cushioned golden peetha throne stands empty. The scene is a ritual puja, not a portrait of a named person.2017-07-04 +1 copiesPhoto 11701232 +2 copies
