December 31 20062006-12-31Outdoor scene of elderly Indian pilgrims sitting on a dusty ground at a crowded bazaar-like gathering. A bearded old man on the right wears a white turban-style cap? No: he has white hair and a long white beard, a faint tilak on his forehead, and a blue-grey shawl over his shoulders, sitting with his hands extended toward bundles. Beside him a bald older man in a light shirt and dhoti sits with hands near the bundles. On the left, a turbaned elderly man in a brown wrap and white cloth leans forward, and a woman in a lavender patterned sari sits with her face in her hand. Around them are a steel tiffin carrier, a metal pot, cloth sacks, a rolled bedding bundle, a bamboo carrying frame, and a red plastic bag. Standing people in white kurtas and colourful saris fill the background among market stalls.2013-02-10February 13 20132013-02-13Outdoor photo of men gathered on dry ground beside palm trees, with stacked bamboo poles and scattered paper litter. A seated man in a light blue shirt is shaving the head of a bare-chested man in a white dhoti, while others stand and watch. Several men in white shirts and dhotis, and a seated woman in a pale sari, stand or sit nearby. Piles of gravel and a small white building are visible in the background.2006-12-31February 15 20132013-02-15A large group of shaved-headed, bare-chested men in white loincloths sits cross-legged on a sandy riverbank, apparently a sanyas initiation gathering at Varanasi. Most look forward with calm or serious expressions, and several rest their arms on their knees or thighs. Behind them, a figure in orange cloth stands at the upper edge of the frame. Sand, bare skin and white cloth dominate the scene, with a plastic bucket visible at upper right.2013-02-13A photograph of an outdoor crowd on a village street. In the foreground, a shaved-headed man with a topknot wears a white dhoti-style wrap over the shoulder and a dark rudraksha-style bead necklace, and he is fastening or adjusting a cloth around the neck of a young man in a black polo shirt. Around them, many men and boys in yellow, white, striped pink and green shirts crowd closely, and a white car and brick wall sit behind them. The man in white has no visible saffron, crown, long hair or ceremonial gold, so his identity is not established by appearance.2012-01-03A photograph of a village street scene during flood relief work. A crowd of about a dozen men stands and sits on a concrete road in front of a yellow-walled building with a barred window. In the foreground an older man in a white shirt and white dhoti turns toward the camera, and a grey-haired man on the left wears a striped green and white cloth over his shoulder. Several men wear white shirts, checked lungis and yellow or orange towels, and a seated man in a red checked shirt rests on a concrete ledge. Two young people in blue striped shirts sit at the lower right, one leaning forward. Corrugated sheets and a damaged shed are visible behind them. No a person candidate is clearly visible.Outdoor photograph in a dusty village street with a crowd of young men and boys pressing close. In the foreground a shaved-headed man with a single tuft at the crown, wearing a white cloth wrap over the shoulder and a wooden rudraksha-style mala, faces away from the camera and places a hand on the neck of a young man in a light green shirt with a small pendant. Behind them men in yellow, red, and striped pink shirts watch and smile, a child stands at left, and a white vehicle with blue trim sits in the background beside a brick wall.2012-01-03February 14 20132013-02-14February 11 20132013-02-11Outdoor scene at a crowded dusty fairground during a mela, with many people sitting on the ground eating food from small leaf or paper plates. In the foreground, a man with grey hair and a white beard wearing a dark shirt and green blanket eats with both hands. Beside him, a man in a striped grey shirt holds food, and to the right a man in a navy tracksuit crouches while eating. A young boy in a green striped sweater eats from a bowl. Behind them, sadhus in saffron and orange robes and turbans, women in saris and shawls, and others walk among makeshift tents and stalls.2013-02-08
