A large mound of pale ash, dried vegetation and wood sits on the ground, with several bright flames burning along its top. A bare-chested man in a white dhoti stands at left, bending toward the fire. Beside him a man in white shirt and dhoti reaches toward the flames with a long pole. A woman in an orange-red saree stands at right among a group of men in white shirts and white dhotis, watching in silence. Green leaves are scattered at the base of the pile. About twenty people are visible in the dim background.2011-01-14A night-time outdoor scene on bare sandy ground where many participants in white garments and white head cloths sit on circular raised mounds of ash around cold fire pits. Several sit close in the foreground, one with a white headband facing away, and rows of seated figures recede into the darkness.
