April 05 20112011-04-05Night photo of a devotional lamp ceremony in a hall with patterned curtains. Two long rows of seated women in saris, many in yellow, orange and red, face each other down a central aisle lit by many tall brass oil lamps (deepa stands) with flames and small plates of flowers. At the far end, a framed portrait with a garland of marigolds and purple flowers sits on a draped table with more lamps. A man in white shirt and dark trousers holding a camera stands at the left edge. A red banner with printed text hangs at the upper right, and a white sign with text sits at left. The scene suggests an aarti or lamp puja.2011-04-05April 05 20112011-04-05April 05 20112011-04-05A photograph of a hall with bare grey walls and tiled steps where women sit in rows on woven mats, many with hands folded in prayer. Oil lamps sit before them on the mats, and a framed picture of a deity murti with garlands stands on a small table at the back. A large framed portrait of a smiling man in orange robes and a red-orange head covering with a purple bird logo hangs on the left wall. Women wear saris and salwar kameez in red, orange, blue and teal, with flowers in their hair and gold necklaces.2011-03-23A photograph of a dimly lit room with a white marble floor where women in saris sit in two long rows along the sides, facing a central altar. Many brass oil lamps with lit wicks are set on brass plates along the floor in front of them. At the far end, a decorated altar holds a deity murti or framed image garlanded with flower strands, with additional lamps and offerings. A single child in white clothing sits near the altar. Some women hold small brass items. The setting suggests a group puja or lamp-lighting ritual indoors. A small framed portrait hangs on the back wall, and a metal figure stands at the right edge.2011-04-15Indoor photo of a large group of women seated on mats in rows, holding lit oil lamps and small brass lamps during an evening ritual. Most wear white saris with gold borders and yellow shawls, while a few wear orange or red. Brass plates and lamps sit on mats in front of them. A projection screen hangs at the upper left and a stage with railings is visible at the left. A woman in the foreground wears a patterned shawl and holds a flame. No a person candidate is clearly visible.2011-01-25September 20 20112011-09-20A large group of women sit cross-legged in rows on a white floor, many in orange or saffron saris and kurtas, others in white with orange or yellow shawls, holding small brass oil lamps and lit candles while performing a ritual. Before them are brass plates with flowers, small brass vessels and orange mats. Behind them stands a row of plastic chairs, a table draped with striped cloth and a monitor at the right edge. Several women wear rudraksha malas. No male candidate for a person is visible, so no appearance-based identification is made.2010-10-24A row of women and some men sit cross-legged along a polished floor, each holding a small brass oil lamp (diya) with a flame. Several wear cream and gold-bordered white saris or dhotis with orange-red shawls draped over their shoulders. Brass plates of yellow flowers, incense sticks and small offerings lie before them, and a clear plastic container of red and orange items sits near the front. Their eyes are lowered in devotion. No one in the row is identified as a person.2011-09-25Blurry evening photograph of a devotional gathering indoors before a patterned curtain. A framed portrait of a woman in an orange garment and white necklace is garlanded with red and yellow flower garlands. Rows of brass oil lamps line both sides of the floor, their flames glowing. In front of the portrait, a woman in an orange sari sits cross-legged beside a lit lamp stand, and a person in a lavender top bends forward near offerings. Standing figures in white and blue-trimmed saris stand at the left edge, and a child in pink sits at the lower left. The portrait is a photograph of a printed picture, not a physical person.2011-04-05September 01 20112011-09-01
