Description

VAJRAASANA

GHERANDA SAMHITA, UPADESHA 2, VERSE 12

Janghaabhyaam Vajravath Kruthvaa Gudha-Paarshve Padhaavubhau |

Vajraasanam Bhavedethath Yoginaam Siddhidaayakam ||2.12||


TRANSLATION

Having hardened the thighs like steel, and placing both the legs on the sides of the anus is called Vajrasana, which gives great extraordinary powers.

TECHNIQUE

With knees, ankles and big toes touching the ground, stand in a kneeling position

Sit erect with the heels under your buttocks

Erect in this asana 30 seconds

IN VAJRAASANA, NEXT-

SHEETHALEE KUMBHAKA

GHERANDA SAMHITA, UPADESHA 5, VERSE 73

Jihvayaa Vaayum Aakrushya Udare Poorayet Shanaihi |

Kshanam Cha Kumbhakam Krutvaa Naasaabhyaam Rechayet Punaha || 5.73 ||


TRANSLATION

The breath has to be filled in the abdomen by drawing air through the tongue. After having retained the breath for a moment, the exhalation should be done through the nostrils.

TECHNIQUE

Close the eyes

Protrude your tongue as much as possible

Roll the sides of the tongue like a tube

Now inhale through the tube formed by the tongue

After inhaling, close your mouth

Hold the breath for a moment. Don’t hold for a long time

Then Exhale through both the nostrils

Do this 21 times (this will completely cool your stomach)

IN VAJRAASANA, NEXT-

SEETHKAAREE PRAANAAYAAMAA

HATHA PRADEEPIKAA, UPADESHA 4, VERSE 43

Seethkaam dadyaath sadaa Vaktre Ghraanenaiva Visarjayet |

Evam Abhyaasa-Yogena Kaamadevo Dviteeyakaha ||4.43||


TRANSLATION

The breath needs to be sucked in through the mouth with a hissing sound and the exhalation to be done through the nostrils. By practicing this Kamadeva – the Cupid becomes the second.

TECHNIQUE

Continue to sit in the same posture and close your eyes

Press the lower teeth with the upper teeth and open the lips comfortably

Suck air through the gaps inbetween the teeth, inhaling with the sound

Listen to the sound of the breath as the air is being drawn in

After inhaling close the mouth

Don’t hold. Exhale through the nose

Do this continuously for 21 minutes. This will completely heal the skin

IN VAJRAASANA, NEXT-

SAMAANA KUMBHAKA

KUMBHAKA PADDHATI, VERSE 62

Naabhaavaapoorya Vaayushcheth Dehe Vyaapya Vidhaaritaha |

Kumbhithe Jvalanam Dhyaayeth Samaanasya Thu Kumbhakaha ||62||


TRANSLATION

After filling the navel region with the air that is spread and held all over the body, one should concentrate on fire and this is known as Samana Kumbhaka.

TECHNIQUE

Inhale completely till the navel is filled

While inhaling visualize that the prana is spread and held all over the body

Hold as long as you can judiciously

While you hold, visualize the fire element in your navel region

When you can not hold any more, exhale

Do this 21 times

IN VAJRAASANA, NEXT-

BHASTRIKAA KUMBHAKA

KUMBHAKA PADDHATI, VERSES 164 & 165

Bhastreva Lohakaarasya Rechapoorau Shramaavadhi |

Vegena Sthanayoroordhvam Thathaha Poororkavarthmanaa ||164||

Jaalandharam Dhrudam Badhvaa Kumbhitham Chandra-Varthmanaa |

Rechayeth Bhasthrikaa Kumbhaha Shareeraagni-Vivardhanaha ||165||


TRANSLATION

One should rapidly inhale and exhale similar to the bellows of a blacksmith till he becomes fatigued. Followed by this he should inhale through the right nostril and then having held the breath with the Jalandhara Bandha, he should exhale through the left nostril. This is Bhastrika Kumbhaka that increases bodily heat.

TECHNIQUE

Rapidly inhale and exhale like the bellows of the black smith until you become fatigued

Then inhale through the right nostril

Press the chin on the chest so that the throat is locked

Hold the breath as long as you can judiciously

Relax the chin and exhale through left nostril

Do this 21 times
