1. PASHCHIMOTTA ASANA

GHERANDA SAMHITA, UPADESHA 2, VERSE 26

Prasaarya Paadau Bhuvi Dhanda-Roopau

Samnyastha-Bhaalam Chithi-Yugma-Madhye|

Yathnena Paadhau Cha DhruthauKaraabhyaam

Yogeendra-Peetam Pashchimoththaanam Aahuhu ||2.26||


TRANSLATION

Having spread both the legs on the ground stiff like a stick, the heels not touching, one should bend forward and rest the forehead on the knees and hold the feet with the hands.


TECHNIQUE

Sit with the legs stretched, the heels not touching one another

Bend forward

Place your forehead on the knees

Catch hold of the feet with your hands

Remain in this pose 30 seconds

2. SHEETHALEE KUMBHAKA

GHERANDA SAMHITA, UPADESHA 5, VERSE 73

Jihvayaa Vaayum Aakrushya

Udare Poorayet Shanaihi |

Kshanam Cha Kumbhakam Krutvaa

Naasaabhyaam Rechayet Punaha || 5.73 ||

TRANSLATION

The breath has to be filled in the abdomen by drawing air through the tongue. After having retained the breath for a moment, the exhalation should be done through the nostrils.

TECHNIQUE

Close the eyes

Protrude your tongue as much as possible

Roll the sides of the tongue like a tube

Now inhale through the tube formed by the tongue

After inhaling, close your mouth

For a moment hold the breath

Exhale through both the nostrils

Do this for 3 minutes

3. SEETHKAAREE PRAANAAYAAMAA

HATHA PRADEEPIKAA, UPADESHA 4, VERSE 43

Seethkaam dadyaath sadaa Vaktre

Ghraanenaiva Visarjayet |

Evam Abhyaasa-Yogena

Kaamadevo Dviteeyakaha ||4.43||


TRANSLATION

The breath needs to be sucked in through the mouth with a hissing sound and the exhalation to be done through the nostrils. By practicing this Kamadeva – the Cupid becomes the second.

TECHNIQUE

Continue to sit in the same posture and close your eyes

Press the lower teeth with the upper teeth and open the lips comfortably

Suck air through the gaps in between the teeth

Be aware of the sound produced

After inhaling close the mouth and exhale through the nose

Do this for 7 minutes

4. PAVANA MUKTHA ASANA

YOGAASANAM, UPADESHA 3, VERSES 4&5

Dvayostu Paadayoho Paarshni Laatvaasva-svasvanitambake |

Jaanunee Vakshasi Saadhur Badhnaati Karabandhanaihi || 3.4 ||

Evam-vidha-Sthitir-yatra Thathra Vayumukthaasanam |

Bhavedanena Vashaashuddhir Malastha-Vayor-Mochanam || 3.5 ||


TRANSLATION

Having brought the two heels close to the perineum and having brought the knees close to the chest region, by the tying of the hands the noble soul one ties the knees. Where there is this kind of a posture, it is called Vayu/Pavana Muktasana. By this the large intestine gets cleansed by the release of the wind.


TRANSLATION-cum-TECHNIQUE

1.Be seated on the ground.

2.Bring two heels close to perineal region.

3.Keep the knees raised. Hold knees with two hands and press them against the chest.

4.Remain in this pose for 30 second

5. TRINETRA KUMBHAKA

KUMBHAKA PADDHATHI, VERSE 192

Sakruth Chandrena Chaapoorya

Dhaarya Sooryena Poorayeth |

Niyamya Poorayennobhyaam

Dhaarayithvaa Yathaa-Vidhi ||

Thrinethra-Kumbhakaha Prokthaha

Thrinethrena Thrisiddhidhaha ||192||


TRANSLATION

Having inhaled through the left nostril and retained, inhale through the right nostril. Having then inhaled through both the nostrils, retain the breath (all these in one shot before exhalation). This is the Trinetra Kumbhaka – the giver of three siddhis – as explained by the three-eyed Shiva. -Kumbhaka Paddhati, 192nd Verse

TECHNIQUE

Inhale through the left nostril

Hold the breath as long as you can judiciously

Without exhalation, inhale through the right nostril

Hold the breath as long as you can judiciously

Again without exhaling, inhale through both the nostrils

Hold the breath as long as you can judiciously

Now exhale through both the nostrils slowly and relax

Do this 21 times

6. TRISHOOLA KUMBHAKA

KUMBHAKA PADDHATHI, VERSE 193

Ghonaabhyaam Cha Mukhenaapi

Yugapath Poorayeth Sadhaa |

Thrishoolinaa Trishoolaakhyaha

Kumbha Ukthas-Thrishoolanuth ||193||

TRANSLATION

Always inhale through the nostrils and mouth together at a time. This is called the Trishoola Kumbhaka – the remover of triple sufferings – as explained by the Thrishooli Shiva.

TECHNIQUE

Inhale through the nostrils and also through the mouth simultaneously

Hold the breath as long as you can

Now exhale through both the nostrils slowly and relax

Do this 21 times
