A dense crowd of Tamil men and women gathers outdoors beneath a palm-leaf and bamboo canopy decorated with green mango leaves and paper streamers. Many men wear white dhotis and shirts, some with pink or red towels over their shoulders. A man in the centre-right wears a white shirt and holds his hands together in a respectful namaskar gesture, while an older bearded man in white stands nearby. Behind them a large blue banner carries Tamil text, and a red-and-orange portrait hangs at the top right beside another banner. The scene feels like a procession or welcome at a temple-town street, with many people pressing forward to see.2009-08-11A crowd of men and women in white shirts and dhotis fills a village street in Tamil Nadu under a bright sky. Many raise their arms and hands in the air, and one man at the left holds a long wooden stick. Behind them a thatched roof shed is decorated with green leaf toran and paper bunting, and a large banner-style poster shows a standing saffron-robed figure beside Tamil lettering. A small white-haired man in front looks ahead with a serious expression. A parked car and a loudspeaker on a pole sit at the right edge.2009-08-11August 11 20092009-08-11August 11 20092009-08-11April 19 20082008-04-19A crowd of devotees stands outdoors under trees near a thatched-roof building, many with palms pressed together in anjali. A man in a teal shirt plays a long brass horn, and nearby a man holds a brass drum. Several shaved-headed men wear white dhotis with gold borders and rudraksha malas, while women wear orange and white saris. Some men in orange or saffron robes and turbans stand in the background. A police officer in uniform appears at the back. A procession or temple ritual seems underway. The image is a photograph and the people are the subject; no identifiable a person figure is clearly distinguishable from the appearance cues shown.2011-01-16A large outdoor crowd of villagers fills a dusty street in Pattanam, Tamil Nadu, pressing together during a procession. Most people wear white shirts and dhotis or saris in cream, red, pink and yellow; several women wear red and maroon saris with kumkum bindis and gold necklaces, and a bald older man in the foreground wears a white shirt. A young man in the lower left has a yellow tilak on his forehead. Behind them a blue-and-white banner hangs from a pole, showing a painted portrait of a figure in an orange turban and a Tamil caption. Tiled-roof houses, a banana plant and a bamboo flagpole line the background.2008-07-28June 24 20142014-06-24 +2 copiesA crowded outdoor event in front of a thatched-roof structure with a banana-leaf and coloured-cloth decorated entrance arch. Many people, mostly women in saris and salwar kameez, press together, some with flowers in their hair and garlands. A large printed banner above the arch shows a portrait and Tamil text announcing an event, with phone numbers. Decorative umbrellas and a stack of colourful umbrella-like shapes sit beside the crowd. Dusk light, dirt ground, and a few people walking in the background.2008-04-19Outdoor photo of a crowd gathered in front of a decorated entrance with a brightly coloured fringed canopy in red, orange and blue at the left. A central figure with long dark hair, a beard and glasses wears an orange-saffron robe and stands among men in white shirts and dhotis who reach toward him. Another person in orange with a flower garland raises a hand in greeting. Blue signboards read Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam in Tamil and a banner with Tamil text hangs above a thatched shed, with strings of colourful bunting and green leaves overhead.
