A large crowd gathers under a long corrugated-roof pavilion decorated with hanging green palm-leaf festoons and a tall palm-frond and banana-bunch arch in the centre. Most people wear white garments: men in white shirts and dhotis, women in white saris and some in yellow or other coloured saris. Many stand close together in the aisles and at the edges, with a few older women and men seated or standing near the front. A striped cloth panel and a red and blue banner hang from the central pole. Hundreds of people fill the open hall, with more figures receding toward the far end under rows of hanging lights.2006-07-17July 01 20142014-07-01A dense outdoor crowd gathers on a village street in Tamil Nadu, mostly men and women in white shirts, white dhotis and saris, with a few in yellow, green and orange. A striped purple, orange and green canopy shelters a decorated altar-like stall with a deity image and flowers on the right, and a white temple tower rises at the top. Many hands are folded in namaskar, and a man at center wears a white shirt with a beaded necklace. Power lines, a palm tree and shops frame the background. No individual can be reliably identified as a person from appearance.2009-08-03July 04 20142014-07-04A photograph of a dense crowd of villagers gathered outdoors beneath a red and gold patterned canopy at a house visit during a Tamil Nadu tour. Several saffron-robed monastics with shaved heads stand at the centre, one with his hands raised in greeting while older women in saris press forward with folded hands. Nearby, a man in a white shirt and a bespectacled man in white clothes lean in among the crowd, and a dark car is parked at the left edge. Green-painted walls, a tree and a thatched hut frame the background.2014-06-24July 03 20142014-07-03 +1 copiesJuly 02 20142014-07-02January 01 20092009-01-01A crowd gathers outdoors under a canopy of banana plants with bunches of green bananas hanging overhead and strings of paper bunting. At the centre, a woman with long dark hair in a saffron-orange garment and a large red floral garland smiles as people press around her. Behind her, a bald man in an orange robe stands near a white-uniformed official and a uniformed police officer. Several people in white clothes join palms in greeting, and a man with a long beard in white is at the right edge. A video camera operator and a parked vehicle are visible in the background.2010-01-23July 04 20142014-07-04 +1 copiesA crowded outdoor street scene under a striped multicoloured canopy hung with mango leaves and green coconuts. At centre, a man in an orange-red turban and a saffron shawl with a white and red garland stands among devotees; a man in saffron robes with a rudraksha mala stands beside him. Around them, many men in white shirts, shaved-headed monks in saffron, and a woman in a teal blouse with flowers in her hair press close. A covered silver-coloured object is held nearby. Cameras and onlookers crowd the foreground.2014-07-01A large crowd of villagers sits and stands under a thatched palm-leaf pandal roof supported by bamboo poles during an outdoor gathering. Many women wear saris in pink, orange, magenta, and purple, with marigold garlands woven into their hair, and several children appear in front. Men wear white shirts and white dhotis or lungis. A seated man in a white shirt sits on a blue plastic chair near green leaves, and a standing man in a white shirt gestures among the crowd. A colourful striped cloth hangs from a pole at the right edge. The setting appears to be a rural community event with many attendees.2008-07-28
