A dense outdoor crowd surges through a street in front of an ornate South Indian temple gopuram-style gateway with painted sculptural figures. Men in white shirts and dhotis, some with white head cloths and sandalwood or vibhuti marks, press forward, while women in saris and salwar are mixed among them. On the right, a decorated temple procession vehicle with a bull mount and a painted deity murti under an ornate arch stands among banana plants. A man in an orange-saffron garment appears at right with a shaved head, and a yellow auto-rickshaw and parked vehicles are visible at left. Blue and white shop signs with Tamil script line the street.2011-12-20A dense crowd of devotees fills a narrow temple street, many in white dhotis and shirts, others in pink and blue saris and salwar. In the centre a man in a white shirt with a rudraksha mala looks ahead among the press. Behind the crowd a golden ceremonial ratha or palanquin, adorned with a bull figure and a colourful canopy, is carried past banana trees and a temple gopuram. Uniformed police officers and orange-robed sadhus are visible among the people. The scene conveys a festival procession at a South Indian temple.2011-12-20A dense crowd of men, women and children packs an open outdoor area under a tin-roofed canopy, many pressing forward with raised hands and phones. In the foreground a shaved-headed priest in white with a saffron-and-gold bordered cloth and a rudraksha mala stands at the bottom edge, while a man in a white shirt and a man in a checked pink shirt with a rudraksha mala guide the crowd. Elderly women in white and blue saris stand at right. Many people wear white dhotis and shirts; a young woman in an orange top stands in the upper centre. No single figure is clearly identifiable as a person, so the scene is recorded only by roles and actions.2011-05-17A large crowd of devotees fills a bamboo-pole pavilion roofed with thatch, many seated on folding chairs and many standing packed together. Women wear saris in orange, pink, teal, maroon and white, and men wear white shirts and dhotis; some hold small items and one young boy in a yellow shirt and tie stands at right. At right a table holds printed material and items, and a bamboo frame runs along the scene. The atmosphere suggests an inaugural gathering at Pattanam, Tamil Nadu, where the page reports a welcome with offerings and flag hoisting. No identifiable a person appearance is clearly visible in the frame.2008-07-28December 20 20112011-12-20December 20 20112011-12-20July 28 20082008-07-28 +1 copiesJuly 28 20082008-07-28 +1 copiesA crowded street procession in Pondicherry, with devotees packed close around a golden ratha chariot draped in flower garlands and decorated with colourful canopies.
