July 01 20092009-07-01A photograph of a ritual in a temple-style hall with a blue wall and yellow door. Two murti figures of a deity couple, one in a green silk sari and one in red and white, are garlanded with purple and white flowers and decorated with silver crowns, sit behind an altar. A golden trident hangs above them. In front, three young men in saffron-orange robes sit on the floor; the nearest, on the left, has his palms joined in prayer while the others sit beside him at a white altar with brass vessels, a silver lamp and a small sivalinga-like stone form. Flower petals and silver bowls of offerings are arranged on the platform.2009-07-01July 01 20092009-07-01Photograph of a vilakku pooja at an outdoor shrine with a stone pavilion. A man in a white dhoti and white shirt, wearing a mala, holds two metal vessels with burning camphor flame aloft before a pair of seated deity murtis adorned with yellow and red marigold garlands; the figures have crowns and are dressed in silver and green. To the left, a man in white with folded hands stands beside a woman in orange sari with folded hands and head bowed. Behind them an orange-robed attendant holds a plate, and another white-clad man bends forward near the base. Brass lamps, a kalasha and a pink-clad small figure sit on the platform.2006-12-31A photograph at night of a temple shrine where a man in saffron-orange dhoti and shawl, with long dark hair and bare chest, holds a lit camphor flame on a metal plate toward a deity murti. Two stone-grey murtis of a couple stand behind a pedestal heaped with garlands of yellow, white, red and pink flowers, with gold crowns and jewelled ornaments. A trident-like staff and brass oil lamps stand beside the shrine, with fruit offerings in front. The setting is an open granite pavilion with carved pillars and dark trees behind, consistent with an aarti during a Shivaratri puja. The man's identity is not established by appearance.2007-02-16July 01 20092009-07-01A photograph of a homa fire ritual in a temple-like hall. A bald man in a white garment stands at right with his back partly to the camera, facing a square brick fire pit where smoke and small flames rise. Behind the pit, a deity murti with a trident and garlands of flowers sits on a decorated seat. Two priests in orange robes sit at left, one with a yellow garland, and copper bowls, a kalasha-style vessel, offerings of sweets and flower petals lie on the brick platform. Several people stand in the background, including a woman in a sari and a person in orange, amid smoke.2009-07-01A photograph of an outdoor homa fire ritual under a draped tent with red and gold fringed valances. Two saffron-robed figures sit at a raised fire pit: the seated central priest has long hair, a rudraksha mala and a gold-coloured necklace, and offers into the smoking fire while an attendant in orange beside him holds a tray. Behind them stand two large deity murtis garlanded with yellow, red and white flower strings, and a dark framed portrait is visible at the top right. Flower garlands and marigold strands decorate the fire pit and banana plants frame the scene. Oil lamps and brass vessels stand at the front.2006-07-17Night photograph inside a temple pavilion with grey stone pillars. A long-haired man with a bare upper torso wears an orange-saffron cloth and a rudraksha-style necklace and holds a small oil lamp toward a pair of metal deity murtis seated on a dark stone pedestal, each adorned with yellow and orange marigold garlands and crowned with ornate headdresses. To his left stands a shaved-headed man in an orange cloth with a white forehead mark, and at the far left another person bends forward. Floral offerings and a brass lamp stand on the base. The scene reads as a puja or aarti at a shrine.2007-02-16April 30 20152015-04-30December 31 20062006-12-31July 01 20092009-07-01
