July 13 20092009-07-13Photograph of a temple procession inside a South Indian temple with gold-painted carved pillars and archways in the background. A central man wears a saffron-orange shawl drawn over his head, a long rudraksha mala, a large ceremonial gold necklace with a gold pendant, and a white armband, with a sandalwood tilak on his forehead. Around him, several men and sannyasis in saffron and orange robes walk, one on the left holding a garland of red roses, marigolds and white jasmine. A bare-chested older man on the right wears a white dhoti, a rudraksha mala and a pink shawl, and a bearded man in white and orange stands beside a woman in white. Several more people in yellow and white clothing crowd the background.2009-07-13A group of saffron-robed sannyasis walks barefoot along a paved street in front of a temple gateway. The central man wears an orange dhoti and shawl with gold borders and a long ornate gold bead necklace, with a red bindi on his forehead. Around him, men in white dhotis with gold-bordered shawls and white-and-orange-clad monastics carry a small brass vessel and an orange cloth bag. Sandalwood tilaka marks cover several foreheads, and rudraksha malas hang on many chests. Behind them, a metal gate and shopfronts line the street. Appearance cues alone are not sufficient to identify the central figure, so his role is described as a saffron-clad sannyasi leading the procession.2011-09-26A photograph of a procession through a crowded temple corridor at night, lit by shop lights and temple lamps. Several men in saffron-orange robes with gold-bordered cloth and garlands walk in front, one holding a white flower garland with a yellow ribbon. Behind them, men in white dhotis carry a brass vessel and ritual objects. An older man in the centre wears a crown-like headband, rudraksha mala and gold pendant, with orange shawl. Onlookers, a child in yellow and women in saris line the walkway, with ornate temple pillars and stalls behind.2012-05-10May 10 20122012-05-10A photograph inside a dimly lit stone temple corridor with tall carved pillars. In the centre, a bare-chested, white-dhoti-clad elder with a white-streaked beard, glasses and a white tripundra stands beside a robed companion in orange. On the right, a younger man in a hooded orange robe with a red bindi and a gold-bead garland walks with hands joined in greeting. Several orange-robed attendants with garlands follow, and men in white shirts and white dhotis walk among them on the stone floor. Behind them, devotees and passersby fill the corridor.2009-01-14A photograph of a temple corridor with carved stone pillars and a golden shrine visible in the background. Several saffron-robed men walk forward in a group, most bare-chested or with saffron shawls, wearing gold necklaces and rudraksha malas. The central figure in the middle wears a saffron cloth with a gold waistband and a decorative headpiece, and a large gold pendant around his neck, with a tall orange-and-white garland arrangement at the upper right. Behind them, white-clad devotees and onlookers, including women in saris and men in white shirts, move along the passage.2012-05-07August 02 20082008-08-02Inside a stone temple corridor with worn grey pillars and a patterned white tiled floor, two saffron-robed sannyasis walk forward. The left one wears an orange and yellow wrap, a red-and-white forehead band, a rudraksha mala and a gold-toned neck chain. The right one, shaved-headed, wears a saffron wrap with a maroon border and a long rudraksha mala. Behind them a third orange-clad figure follows, and several men in white dhotis and a checked shirt stand at the sides, some with hands folded. A dim shrine with a deity murti is visible in the background. Whether the left figure is a person cannot be confirmed from appearance.2012-05-21A procession moves down a stone-pillared temple corridor with lamps glowing overhead.
