A photograph of a tall, ornately carved South Indian stone temple gopuram tower rising under a blue sky with scattered clouds. Its tiers are densely covered with sculpted figures, pillars and niches, topped by a finial. In the foreground, a few people walk along the base: a man in a white shirt and white dhoti, and figures in orange or saffron clothing near the bottom edge. A low colonnaded hall with a flat roof extends at the right.

A photograph of a large ornate South Indian temple gopuram, tiered and covered with carved sculptures of figures and animals, its warm sandstone tones lit by low golden sunlight. A stone enclosure wall and a small arched gateway stand in front. In the foreground, several people walk past a row of arched stone-capped barricades with printed notice boards; one woman wears a white sari and another a green and teal outfit, while a man in dark clothing walks at right. A vendor's cart with green and red panels stands at left.

A photograph of a tall, ornately carved stone temple gopuram at Dharapuram, Tamil Nadu, rising in tiers covered with sculpted deities, pillars and niches under a pale sky. Several people walk in the courtyard at its base: a man in a white shirt and trousers on the left, a woman in an orange sari near the centre, and a child in front of her. No a person candidate is visible, and the figures are too small and distant to attribute any ritual activity to them.

A large carved stone gopuram temple gateway of Kanjanur Agniswarar Temple at dusk, with ornate tiered sculpture, niches and figures on its facade. Yellow and red barricades line a paved walkway leading toward the arched entrance. Several devotees walk through, including a man in a white dhoti and shirt, women in green, pink and purple saris, and a child in white. Lamp posts stand along the path and a white van is parked at the left edge.

Exterior of a tall, richly carved sandstone temple gateway tower (gopuram) with tiers of sculpted niches, figures and small shrines, topped by finials and a bird sculpture. A stone archway sits at the lower left, and a few small figures walk near the base. A smaller distant temple tower rises at the right under a pale sky. A low brick wall and a leafy tree stand in the foreground, with a metal lamp post at the left edge. Several small people are visible near the archway and at the wall, but they are too small to count with certainty.

Exterior of a tall, sandstone-coloured South Indian temple gopuram covered in tiers of carved deities, figures and niches under a pale sky. A low stone entrance arch with a small carved top stands at left beside a brick compound wall, a small orange banner with a yellow emblem hangs on a pole in front, and a few small tree branches and lamp posts appear in the foreground. Several small tower spires stand to the right. No people are clearly visible in the frame.

Exterior of a stone temple with a tiered, richly carved gopuram-style tower topped by a rounded kalasha-like finial, its walls covered in sculpted deities and figures in niches. Metal handrails and stairs lead up a side platform at left, and a pillared pavilion with a few small figures stands at right. Overcast sky.

Exterior view of a large stone Hindu temple at dusk, with a tall, tiered gopuram covered in carved sculptures and dome-like niches rising above a low wall. A smaller shikhara-style tower stands behind it under a pale evening sky. In the foreground, a dusty road has a yellow auto-rickshaw at left, a parked motorcycle, scattered litter, and a battered signboard at right. A few small figures in white clothing walk near the gateway at left. Some tall sign posts with green road signage appear at the far left.

Low-angle photograph looking up at a tall, tapering temple tower of weathered grey-brown stone, its surface covered with niches, arched recesses, carved pilasters and small rounded openings in tiers. Small gilded seated figures sit in several niches on the lower wall, and a dark mid-level band with a carved facade runs across the base. The sky is overcast white, and no people are visible.
