At right, a man in an orange-and-red striped shirt and cream trousers joins his hands. Most wear white shirts, white dhotis and white sarees or salwar-style outfits, with some in yellow, green and pale blue. A few people wear rudraksha or lanyard-style badges around their necks. Metal handrails with red-and-white painted steps lead up past black stone pillars. Rows of unlit oil lamps line the red stepped banks on the left, and potted plants sit on the upper steps. Many devotees, mostly women in white and in bright saris of pink, green, yellow and orange, sit closely packed on the steps and along the railing, some holding long bamboo poles or sticks. A man in white stands among them with arm extended, and banana leaves and green decorative leaves are tied along the railings. The scene suggests a night ritual gathering with a mass of devotees facing the water.2010-02-12
