November 12 20102010-11-12A photograph of a night-time ritual gathering in an open outdoor courtyard with a dark sky and string lights overhead. A shaved-headed man in a saffron-orange robe with a golden-yellow border and a rudraksha mala stands at the center, facing away, receiving a folded orange-and-red cloth offering from a man in a white dhoti with a red shawl. Behind them, devotees in white dhotis and red shawls stand with hands folded in anjali, and women in saris press palms together. Several participants have white vibhuti and tripundra markings on their foreheads. On the right, a dark stone deity murti with a garland stands on a red-tiled dais. The crowd of roughly twenty people stands in a loose line around the courtyard.2015-07-07December 31 20112011-12-31A night outdoor procession moves across a dusty earthen ground under bright floodlights, with a building with orange-brown walls at left. In the centre, a woman in an orange sari with a long white and orange flower garland walks at the front. Beside and behind her, a man in an orange robe with a rudraksha mala and a shaved head walks, and other men and women in white dhoti and sari, some with white shawls and beaded necklaces, follow. A man at right in a white dhoti carries a brass tray with banana leaves and offerings. Several onlookers in casual shirts stand at the edges. The scene is a devotional walking procession with an orange-clad figure and white-clad devotees carrying offerings.2011-05-16March 06 20162016-03-06 +1 copiesNovember 12 20102010-11-12Night-time outdoor ritual at a temple courtyard with coloured fairy lights in the background. In the foreground, a fire pit (homa kunda) with ash and embers sits in the lower centre. A man in an orange-yellow dhoti and ash markings on his forehead holds a small object as he walks past the fire pit, while behind him a line of devotees in white dhotis with red shawls stands with palms pressed together. On the right, a man seated in lotus posture wears a deep red-orange turban, red robe, white dhoti and a long beaded mala, with hands folded in front of him, appearing to be a priest or devotee. A large black linga, garlanded with yellow and white flowers, stands behind the line. Onlookers in white saris and dark clothing watch from the back. Hindu ritual setting, possibly a homa or fire ceremony.2015-07-07December 21 20092009-12-21November 21 20102010-11-21Night procession on a paved temple ground in front of an illuminated white gopuram-style shrine with a lit lamp and sculpted figures above the door. Several people walk together: a young man in the centre wears an orange dhoti and shawl with a rudraksha mala and holds his hands together in namaskar; beside him a shaved-headed young man in white dhoti and shawl with a sacred thread. Behind them, saffron-robed men and a woman in orange walk with a bag and offerings, while older men in white dhotis and shirts and women in white saris follow. No clear marker of a person's identity is visible, so the central figure is described by role only.2011-10-07August 02 20082008-08-02March 06 20162016-03-06 +1 copies
