Night outdoor scene at a temple courtyard lit by a raised bronze lamp. A priest in a white dhoti and shawl, with a red border, holds a long-handled torch to the wide copper lamp atop a white-draped pillar, its flame rising high. Beside him stands a woman in a saffron-orange sari with a flower garland, hands at rest, while a silver puja vessel with green leaves and a small brass plate sit on a white-covered table in front. Grey stone statues of standing figures line the left, a black Shiva lingam stands at right, and palm trees frame the background. The priest is performing a lamp-lighting ritual for Karthikai Deepam.
