June 24 20142014-06-24A dense outdoor street crowd gathers in front of a colourful South Indian temple gopuram, its tiers decorated with painted deity figures, lions and a kalasha-topped spire. A thatched bamboo canopy shades the temple entrance, with mango leaf strings hung across the doorway and a small orange-and-red signboard beside it. Several men in saffron and orange robes stand near the centre, one holding a folded orange cloth, while men in white shirts and dhotis, some with red shawls, press around them. A loudspeaker is mounted on a utility pole, and palm trees and low brick houses line the street under a pale sky.2014-06-24 +1 copiesA street procession in a South Indian town: a deity murti or image decorated with thick garlands of marigold and yellow flowers sits under a canopy of large banana leaves, with a banana bunch hanging from a tree beside it. Two wooden poles rest across the front of the cart. A woman in a pink-and-orange sari reaches toward the image, and a man in a white dhoti and maroon-checked shirt with a yellow shawl stands at the front. A man in white with a saffron scarf stands near the centre, and a bearded man in white clothes with long hair stands at right with palms pressed together. A large crowd of devotees, mostly women and men in white and light clothing, surrounds the procession, with a red-and-yellow ball among the crowd. A painted cloth banner with peacocks is at left.2018-01-18July 17 20082008-07-17Outdoor temple procession scene in front of a thatched-roof building with a red brick wall. Below, a crowd of shaved-headed men in white and in saffron/orange robes holds brass trays of offerings, including coconuts, flowers and sweets. A man in a white shirt and brown trousers stands at the ratha holding a tray of yellow flowers. A saffron-robed sannyasi in an orange shawl wears a rudraksha mala and stands among devotees. Other onlookers and a motorcycle are visible in the background.2011-01-16January 18 20182018-01-18December 30 20072007-12-30A photo of an outdoor procession in a village street with a decorated palanquin or ratha covered in banana stalks and a canopy. Around them, a crowd of devotees in white and orange clothes, some women with long braids decorated with flowers, raise hands in worship.
