A cremation ghat at a riverside funeral platform with a fire burning on a pyre of logs and straw. Smoke rises across the scene. Several men in shirts and trousers stand close around the flames, one in a white shirt, one in a pink shirt, one in a blue and yellow jacket, and one bare-chested man in a white vest and dhoti at right. Strings of orange marigold garlands lie along the edge of the stone platform. Behind them stand a brick wall and an orange-painted wall.

A white shroud-like cloth lies on the logs. Around the fire stand several men: one in a grey zip jacket gestures with open hands, a young man in a striped green-and-white hooded top raises an arm, a man in a plaid shirt stands beside them, and on the right a man in a brown vest and white shawl stands near the edge. A woman in a white sleeveless top and grey wrap stands at the left. Wrapped bundles and bags sit on the ground nearby. No a person candidate is visible.2013-02-13A photograph of a riverside cremation ghat with a large wood fire burning in the foreground. Several men stand and crouch around the pyre, tending logs and a wrapped body. One man in an orange-and-cream vest and dark trousers bends over the flames, another in a striped shirt leans in beside him, and a bare-chested man with a pink cloth over his shoulder stands at the left edge. A man in a brown waistcoat and white shawl gestures at right, and a bright yellow-and-orange cloth lies on the ground at right. Stacked logs and a bundle of green stalks sit at the bottom right. No a person candidate is visible, and the scene shows people attending the cremation rather than an ashram or ritual event.2013-02-13February 13 20132013-02-13February 13 20132013-02-13November 14 20052005-11-14A photograph of a riverside cremation ghat in Varanasi with thick smoke drifting over the water. A crowd of about thirty men in white dhotis, white head cloths and checked or pink shirts stands on the muddy bank around bodies wrapped in orange and marigold-covered cloth. A red boat is tied at the top left with several people seated on its deck.2014-05-14Outdoor cremation pyre of stacked logs, already burning with tall orange flames and smoke rising, set on brick base on open grass under a colourful striped tent canopy. Two shirtless figures in saffron-orange dhotis stand on the right, one with long dark hair, facing the pyre. Several men stand close around the pyre: a bald man in a white dhoti and shawl in the foreground, a man in an orange-brown kurta, a white-bearded elderly man, and a man in a teal-striped wrap at right. A man wears a light blue turban. Scattered litter, orange and red cloth, and plastic bags lie on the dry ground behind the fire.
