A photograph of an open pit in the ground, lined with glowing red coals and two flames rising from a crucible-like vessel set in the earth. Dark ground surrounds the pit with scattered metal rods, a ladle-like tool and debris. Near the top edge, the lower legs of people in checked dhoti-style cloth are partly visible, but no person stands clearly in the frame. The scene suggests metal casting work being done in a makeshift furnace.
