Outdoor Pongal celebration on bare ground. In the foreground a clay pot boils over a wood fire on stacked bricks, milk spilling down its sides, with three sugarcane stalks standing as supports. Behind it a colourful rangoli design of a kalasha with leaves is drawn on the ground, with chalk writing nearby. A large printed portrait on a banner stand shows a smiling figure in a red turban and white flower garland seated on an ornate gold chair with a leopard-print cushion, a bowl before him. Two people in white dhoti clothing stand at the left edge.

Two terracotta pots sit on a brick hearth over a small wood fire, with a sugarcane stalk tripod framing the pots and palm leaf bundles lying nearby. A seated statue of a smiling figure in a maroon-red turban, orange and white flower garlands, and a rudraksha-style necklace sits on a golden pedestal in the left background, with its hands raised in blessing. Brass pooja vessels, a small bell and lamps lie on a wooden board near the hearth. Red boundary wall, palm and shrub foliage behind. A second person in blue sits far back at the wall edge. A rangoli-style chalk drawing with face motifs marks the ground at right. Smoke rises from the pot, which is topped with white milk-cooked rice. A tripod of bamboo poles tied with straw and marigold garlands stands over the pot. Behind it, a seated figure on an ornate gold throne with a decorated backrest, wearing a garland and a red mark on the forehead, sits under a canopy of mango leaves and marigold garlands. No physical people are clearly visible; the seated figure appears to be a deity murti or statue rather than a living person, so a person is none. The scene reflects Makara Sankranti (Kanumu) celebrations with pongal offering and Gow Puja context.2023-01-16January 15 20162016-01-15 +1 copiesA courtyard scene of a Pongal-style Makara Sankranti ritual outdoors.
