A street procession in a small South Indian town moves down a paved road lined with trees, shops and power lines. A decorated ratha or palanquin with a golden canopy, garlands and bright floral trim leads the crowd. Many participants wear white dhotis and white shirts, and several carry orange-saffron flags on poles. A few women in orange and red saffron-toned saris walk among them. Passing buses and two-wheelers share the road, and onlookers stand along the pavement.
